Buckley, a wealthy bachelor, tells why he never married. In the story, he is selfish. At thirty, he is accepted by the daughter of a millionaire: but her father forbids the marriage. At forty-three, he meets, on the golf links, the right girl who is very friendly and even encourages him. He puts off asking her for one year, first for one year while he is saving money, and then a little longer, because he found just courting her, so pleasant. The jolt comes one evening when he finds that an old admirer of hers has come home from Australia and has been accepted. This shock leaves him a heart broken and prematurely aged man. Written by
