"AUTEUR" is a satirical comedy/character study that follows an ambitious video pirate from delusions of grandeur to a well-deserved fall from grace. ERIC PELHAM, our protagonist/anti-hero, thinks he's a real filmmaker as he callously films major motion pictures, then "pirates" them into VHS and DVD copies to be sold on the black market internationally. Although he claims to be engaged in this nefarious activity in order to raise money that will produce his own screenplay, Eric quickly learns that the rest of the world, particularly the world of Hollywood, is not as foolish as he thinks, and he isn't nearly as clever as he would like to believe. Did You Know?

A flashback sequence that took place in the early-'80s was deleted after the first rough cut. It depicted Eric as a kid (played by Creagen Dow), how he met Lenny, and how he learned to be a video pirate. Shot on a circa-1983 home video camera, the picture quality of the tape was deemed too poor, and the sequence ultimately unnecessary, in spite of the filmmakers' fondness for it. It will be included on an upcoming edition of the DVD. See more »

Tony: You're an original. A real... what's that French word?
Eric Pelham: Auteur. The word is "auteur."

Great film
11 January 2007 | by terryk-2See all my reviews

Great little film about a film pirate who gets his just rewards. The script by Alex Simon is particularly sharp with some great twists and turns. The lead filmmaker character is well-drawn and I liked the sort of Chandleresque voice-over. The guys who make his pirate film deals were also noteworthy and fun. I particularly didn't see the last twist coming, but boy, did this character deserve it. I enjoyed the lead filmmaker guy, as well as the actor who plays the movie star. The animation and the titles were outstanding. AFI is putting out some good stuff these days, better than the hackfest at USC Film School to be sure. Definitely one of the better shorts I've seen.
