"AUTEUR" is a satirical comedy/character study that follows an ambitious video pirate from delusions of grandeur to a well-deserved fall from grace. ERIC PELHAM, our protagonist/anti-hero, thinks he's a real filmmaker as he callously films major motion pictures, then "pirates" them into VHS and DVD copies to be sold on the black market internationally. Although he claims to be engaged in this nefarious activity in order to raise money that will produce his own screenplay, Eric quickly learns that the rest of the world, particularly the world of Hollywood, is not as foolish as he thinks, and he isn't nearly as clever as he would like to believe. Did You Know?

A flashback sequence that took place in the early-'80s was deleted after the first rough cut. It depicted Eric as a kid (played by Creagen Dow), how he met Lenny, and how he learned to be a video pirate. Shot on a circa-1983 home video camera, the picture quality of the tape was deemed too poor, and the sequence ultimately unnecessary, in spite of the filmmakers' fondness for it. It will be included on an upcoming edition of the DVD. See more »

Tony: You're an original. A real... what's that French word?
Eric Pelham: Auteur. The word is "auteur."

Very Well Done
31 December 2006 | by Oopdeegoo-1See all my reviews

It's not often that you see a short whose subject easily lends itself to possible expansion into a feature film. Auteur is one of those gems.

Starting with a well-written script from Alex Simon, confident direction by Kevin Abrams and anchored with a strong performance from Beau Clark, Auteur takes its viewers inside the morally ambiguous world of Hollywood film-making. A landscape where the denizens will pimp their mothers if they think it'll get them a greenlight. Aspiring writer/director Eric Pelham finds out the hard way what happens when one is on the receiving end of the conscience-free chicanery in which he traffics. Kudos to the filmmakers. I look forward to their future endeavors.
