It has been 8 years since the last Star Trek movie, Star Trek Beyond, graced the big screen. Ever since, while there have been several TV shows and more on the way, the futuristic space franchise has not returned to the big screen despite the announcement of a sequel before the release of the third movie.

Its loyal and huge fanbase has thus been eagerly waiting, hoping to see the cast of the rebooted saga once again. While negotiations with actors and writers have been broken several times before, the inclusion of Steve Yockey as the new screenwriter has created a significant buzz. And Paramount still hopes that the sequel to Beyond will be the last film of the rebooted movie series featuring its original cast.

James T. Kirk was the youngest Captain in Starfleet, rising fast in both timelines. Kirk went from Cadet to Lieutenant to full Captain in Star Trek 2009's Kelvin Timeline. Chris Pine's Kirk became Captain of the Enterprise at just 25 years old.
Star Trek's James T. Kirk was a young man when he became Captain of the USS Enterprise, but in the Kelvin Timeline of J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movies, Kirk gets his promotion a lot faster than he does in Star Trek's Prime Timeline. Introduced in Star Trek: The Original Series in 1966, William Shatner portrayed the original Captain James T. Kirk, who was the hero of Star Trek: Tos for 3 seasons before he starred in 7 Star Trek movies from 1979-1994. Chris Pine took over the role of Captain Kirk in Abrams' reboot films, which resulted in a successful Star Trek trilogy from 2009-2016.

Destruction of USS Enterprise is a common theme in Star Trek movies for big screen spectacle. Some films managed to thrill without destroying Enterprise, becoming franchise hits. The USS Enterprise in Star Trek IV, V, Insurrection, and Star Trek 2009 remains mostly intact, avoiding destruction.
The starship Enterprise avoided destruction in only five out of the thirteen Star Trek movies. Both the USS Enterprise commanded by Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and the USS Enterprise-d, commanded by Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) were completely destroyed in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and Star Trek Generations. However, six more Star Trek movies have doled out considerable amounts of destruction to the cinematic versions of the starship Enterprise. The events of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan left the USS Enterprise in need of serious repairs, while Star Trek: First Contact saw the USS Enterprise-e half assimilated by the Borg Collective.

Star Trek (2009) relaunched the franchise with a diverse cast and explored an alternate timeline split from the main timeline. Chris Pine played James T. Kirk, who goes from cadet to captain of the USS Enterprise and saves Earth from destruction. The cast also includes Zachary Quinto as Spock, Leonard Nimoy as Spock Prime, Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy, and Zoe Saldana as Uhura.
Star Trek (2009) helped relaunch the Star Trek franchise in the modern era and re-imagined the adventures of Captain James T. Kirk and the crew of the USS Enterprise with a diverse cast of new faces. Directed by J.J. Abrams, Star Trek (2009) was the first franchise project produced after the cancelation of Star Trek: Enterprise in 2005, and the 11th Star Trek movie overall. Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock's friendship in Star Trek (2009) was inspired by the bond between John Lennon and Paul McCartney of The Beatles. The personal tragedies experienced by Kirk and Spock in the alternate timeline strengthened their connection, just as Lennon and McCartney were brought together by their shared hardships. Kirk is likened to McCartney, the optimist who stays positive, while Spock is compared to Lennon, who embraces a more fatalistic perspective due to his logical nature.
The friendship between Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and Mr. Spock (Zachary Quinto) in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek (2009) was modeled after The Beatles' John Lennon and Paul McCartney, according to co-writer Roberto Orci. Pine and Quinto, along with the cast of Star Trek (2009), proved that younger actors could embody the iconic characters originally played by William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, and the cast of Star Trek: The Original Series. A new Star Trek origin movie set "decades before" the Chris Pine movies could potentially explore the Earth-Romulan War, providing new information to fans of the franchise. Another possibility for the new movie is to focus on the USS Kelvin and the life of George Kirk, shedding light on Kirk's family history and ending where Star Trek (2009) began. A Captain Pike origin story could feature an early version of the character from the Kelvin timeline, exploring his conflicting views on the response to the USS Kelvin's destruction.
A new Star Trek origin movie has been announced by Paramount, set "decades before" the Chris Pine movies, but what story could it tell? It's unclear at this stage if the new Star Trek origin movie is set before or after the divergence in the timeline caused by the destruction of the USS Kelvin. As Star Trek fans, we may quibble about certain aspects of the franchise. We all have our opinions about the best captain or the general ethos of the show. But we can all agree on one thing: Star Trek is about boldly going where no one has gone before. It’s right there at the start of the show!
And yet, for whatever reason, Trek producers seem obsessed with going backwards, excavating the years before the adventures of Kirk and Spock on The Original Series. First we got Star Trek: Enterprise in 2001, then the J.J. Abrams reboot in 2009, then Discovery in 2017, and again with the spin-off Strange New Worlds. In fact, until Discovery jumped ahead 900 years at the end of the second season, the franchise had not moved the timeline past 2002’s Star Trek: Nemesis.

Paramount Pictures is developing a new Star Trek movie set "decades before" J.J. Abrams' Star Trek 2009, which will serve as an origin story for the franchise. Previous attempts to make Star Trek 4 have not been successful, but it is still in "active development" as the final chapter of Abrams' Star Trek saga starring Chris Pine. The Star Trek brand and I.P. have been thriving on Paramount+ with successful TV series like Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, and Star Trek Strange New Worlds, as well as the upcoming made-for-streaming movie Star Trek: Section 31.
A new Star Trek movie set "decades before" J.J. Abrams' Star Trek 2009 is reportedly in development at Paramount Pictures. Leonard Nimoy's approach to playing Spock changed due to the character's personal evolution and the introduction of Zachary Quinto's younger version. Star Trek 2009 showcases a broad spectrum of Spock's character, with Nimoy feeling comfortable and personally connected to the role. Spock Prime, played by Nimoy, becomes a tragic figure in the alternate Kelvin Timeline, never returning to his proper universe and eventually dying on New Vulcan.
Leonard Nimoy explains his different approach to playing Spock in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek 2009. Prior to Nimoy donning Spock's Vulcan ears in Abrams' Star Trek reboot movie, the last time the legendary actor played his Vulcan alter ego was in 1991 when Spock appeared in both Star Trek: The Next Generation's "Unification" two-parter and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. In Star Trek Into Darkness, Spock's decision to seek outside help to defeat Khan was necessary because the young Enterprise crew was outmatched by Khan's superior intellect and physical strength. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds depicts the years of experience and growth that Kirk, Spock, and Uhura gain serving under Captain Pike, showing why they would be better equipped to face Khan in the future. The Kelvin Timeline Enterprise crew's achievement in defeating Khan is all the more impressive due to their relative inexperience, showcasing their ability to overcome obstacles and save the day.

Spock met an alternate version of himself in Star Trek: The Animated Series, where a giant clone of him was created to bring peace to the galaxy. In contrast to Kirk's fights with his doppelgangers, Spock approaches meeting his double with curiosity and willingness to work together. The post-9/11 world was rough on "Star Trek." The not-super-popular "Star Trek: Enterprise" debuted on September 26, 2001, and the world wasn't in the mood. The U.S. president at the time, George W. Bush, began to affect violent, revenge-forward rhetoric, and many U.S. citizens were in a bitter, wounded mindset. While some may say that the utopian future of "Trek" was needed at that time, one can see how its idealism felt out of place. "Star Trek" would have us reaching out to our enemies and solving problems through diplomacy. That suggested course of action didn't sit well with a nation itching to enact justice. It's no wonder films like "The Avengers" took off in the post-9/11 milieu; the Avengers avenge the destruction of our cities. Diplomacy was out, freelance super-powered military mercs were in.
So when "Enterprise" was canceled in 2005 after four seasons, it seemed that "Star Trek" was at an end.

Lt. Kirk and Commander Seven of Nine both have unique journeys to becoming Captains of the USS Enterprise, a newer kind of macro story in Star Trek. J.J. Abrams' Star Trek 2009 movie explores Kirk's rise from Starfleet Cadet to Acting Captain of the Enterprise, a story not replicated in the TV series. The recent era of Star Trek focuses on telling the story of how Captains earn their commands, a departure from the traditional fully formed Captain introductions.
Star Trek's James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) and Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) don't have many similarities on the surface, but they share one important story in common. On Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Lt. Kirk was just promoted to First Officer of the USS Farragut en route to his destiny to become Captain of the USS Enterprise. Star Trek: Picard season 3 ended with Commander Seven of Nine's rise to Captain of the USS Enterpise-g.

Where to Watch Powered by Star Trek 4 has faced numerous delays and struggles in getting off the ground, leaving its future uncertain. In Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 6, Lt. Kirk beams aboard the Starship Enterprise to see his brother, Lt. Sam Kirk (Dan Jeannotte). But the Kirk brothers' reunion quickly goes south, and James is left alone until his curiosity is piqued by Uhura, who is in emotional distress.

When Spock’s family visited the Enterprise during “Journey to Babel” in Star Trek: The Original Series, Kirk ended up getting stabbed. When the Enterprise visited the planet Vulcan for Spock’s wedding in “Amok Time,” Kirk almost got choked to death. The point? Vulcan family reunions are tricky!
In Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 5, “Charades,” when T’Pring’s family visits the Enterprise for an engagement dinner, Spock’s entire biology is suddenly altered by a nearby alien intelligence, and this time, Nurse Chapel has to risk her life to set things right while Pike has his cooking insulted.
Along the way, “Charades” drops several references to the entire Trek franchise, deepening our knowledge of Vulcans, in ways both highly logical and hilarious. Here are the biggest Easter eggs and shout-outs we caught in this episode.

Pretty much every actor has a dream role, even if it's one they don't expect they'd ever get the chance to actually play. This can be said for Paul Wesley, who rose to fame with his role as the vampire Stefan Salvatore in the hit CW series The Vampire Diaries. Wesley is now becoming more recognized for his recent casting as Captain Kirk in the Paramount+ series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, following William Shatner and Chris Pine as the third actor to play Kirk in live-action.
Of course, landing the role of an iconic character like Captain Kirk has been a dream come true in many ways for Wesley, who explains as much in a new interview with InStyle. In fact, had he not been cast as Kirk, Wesley says he may have named the Star Trek captain as his "dream role." Faced with picking another potential part to...

Paul Wesley continues to demonstrate his acting versatility. After having achieved a high degree of popularity thanks to his role as Stefan Salvatore in The Vampire Diaries, the actor decided to continue his career with a completely different role but even more popular than The CW’s vampire.
In 2022, Wesley joined the series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds to play none other than Captain James T. Kirk, making a guest appearance. In the second season of the show he would become a recurring character, appearing a few more times.
Despite the fact that both characters, Stefan and Kirk may have points in common in terms of reaching mass audiences, Star Trek is one of the biggest science fiction franchises in all of history and playing one of its great protagonists entails a great responsibility, something that Wesley has taken very seriously as a fan of the original show. But, at the same time,...

Warning: This article contains Spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2.Famously, Star Trek's Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) never married, but he had no shortage of love interests in both his personal and professional lives. Many of Kirk's most important relationships were from before he assumed command of the USS Enterprise, but two particular ex-girlfriends would return to play a big part in his later life. During his five-year mission on the Enterprise, Kirk had no time for serious romantic relationships, with one or two notable exceptions. However, he certainly gained a reputation as a ladies' man during Star Trek: The Original Series.
That reputation also defined Chris Pine's interpretation of Kirk in the J.J. Abrams movies. One of the earliest scenes in Star Trek (2009) saw Kirk attempt to hide from Cadet Nyoyta Uhura (Zoe Saldana) after a one-night stand with her Orion roommate. Star...

Warning: contains spoilers for Star Trek Annual 2023!Even Star Trek admits that the consoles from the Original Series make no sense. Although the producers of the original Star Trek tried their best to make the Enterprise look futuristic, the fact remains that a lot of technology from the original Trek series looks outdated, especially by today’s standards. This gets a callout from Tom Paris in Star Trek Annual 2023, as he admits the layout makes no sense.
Star Trek Annual 2023 is written by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing, drawn by Rachael Stott, colored by Charlie Kirchoff and lettered by Clayton Cowles. In the story, the USS Theseus' neural network has seemingly gained sentience, patterning holographic avatars after some of Starfleet’s biggest names, including Captain Kirk and the USS Enterprise Ncc-1701. Sisko and his crew find themselves on the bridge of the storied ship, trying to figure out what has happened to their holodeck.

Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2, Episode 4 - "Among The Lotus Eaters"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds almost introduced a great new Commodore, and it's Starfleet's loss that it didn't happen. Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 4, "Among the Lotus Eaters," sent Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and the USS Enterprise back to Rigel VII, first seen in Star Trek's original pilot, "The Cage." Pike and the Enterprise crew had to endure massive memory loss to redeem Chris' aborted mission five years earlier, but Pike also set off a personal crisis of his own making by foolishly ending his relationship with Captain Batel (Melanie Scrofano).
Star Trek: The Original Series canon establishes that before Captain Pike's debilitating delta-ray accident in 2265, he gets promoted to Fleet Captain. This is a high honor, but it's less than the rank of Commodore, which is a lower grade of Rear Admiral.

From South Park’s Chef to Two and a Half Men’s Charlie Harper, some iconic TV characters have been written out of their show in really silly ways. Whether a cast member has chosen to depart from the series or they’ve been fired by the network, TV writers are often required to write certain actors' characters out of their shows. This might mean an off-screen death, a move to a new city, or something else entirely. Since these character exits are often due to contractual complications and not a creative decision, it can be tricky to figure out an organic way to work it into the story.
The Simpsons famously satirized TV character departures when Poochie was written out of The Itchy & Scratchy Show with the explanation that “Poochie died on the way back to his home planet.” That’s an exaggeration of the lazy ways writers remove...

While Star Trek: The Next Generation gave Gates McFadden a chance to shine as Dr. Beverly Crusher, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has made great use of Babs Olusanmokun's real-life skills for his character, Dr. Joseph M'Benga. Strange New Worlds follows the adventures of the USS Enterprise under the command of Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), and Olusanmokun stars as the ship's Chief Medical Officer. On Star Trek: The Original Series, Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley) admitted that fighting was not his strong suit and it became an unspoken rule that Star Trek doctors were healers and not fighters. However, newer Star Trek series have called that "rule" into question.

My mind to your mind. My thoughts to your thoughts. For generations, audiences haven't been able to get enough of Star Trek's masterpiece, Mr. Spock. With a literal nature and an iconic eyebrow raise, this half-Vulcan and half-Human has us hooked. First with Leonard Nimoy in the Original Series and now with Ethan Peck taking the reins in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. And something that's getting more exploration is what happens when Spock lets out his more human side — his emotions. He suppressed his feelings for so long until suddenly; he had to let them out to defeat the Gorn. And now he's struggling with the after-effects. He's become the Vulcan with emotions. But he won't let that stop him. With a little adjustment, Spock can make anything work.

The Star Trek: The Next Generation reunion in Star Trek: Picard season 3 was thrilling, but it came at the cost of some major story teases being completely forgotten about. Picard was ultimately a character piece that focused on the twilight years of Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) as he reconciled the mistakes of his past. In season 1, Jean-Luc confronted his own mortality, while in seasons 2 and 3 he reconciled his issues with his father, and his Borg trauma to become a father to Ensign Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers).
As Star Trek: Picard was predominantly focused on its central character, the show can be forgiven for not focusing on the wider implications of many of the story ideas it introduced into Star Trek canon. However, there were so many characters and story elements abandoned between Picard seasons 2 and 3 that it hardly seemed worth introducing them in the first place. It's entirely possible...

As the Writers Guild of America strike completes its second month, the Association of Motion Picture and Television Producers still refuses to reopen negotiations. Countless writers, actors and other artists are waiting to find out if shows they worked their entire lives for will still happen. In fact, two WGA strikes threatened to kill Star Trek, but each time creative thinking saved the franchise.
If the studios agree to a fair deal for the writers by the end of next month, 2023 would mark the shortest writers strike on record. The current shortest strike happened in 1973, right when series creator Gene Roddenberry just got NBC to put Star Trek back on the air. The longest writers strike in history happened in 1988, lasting a full 22 weeks. The strike coincided with the start of the second season of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Roddenberry's last shot at turning his universe into an enduring franchise.

While actor Paul Wesley rose to fame with his unforgettable role as the vampire Stefan Salvatore on The Vampire Diaries, he hasn't looked back at all since ending his run playing the character. Based on the novel series by L. J. Smith, The Vampire Diaries ran on The CW for eight seasons between 2009 and 2017. Wesley starred alongside Ian Somerhalder as his brother Damon while Nina Dobrev also starred as their shared love interest, Elena Gilbert. The story of the Salvatores and Elena was concluded at the end of The Vampire Diaries, though the franchise would go on to produce two spinoffs, The Originals and Legacies, with the latter concluding in 2022.
In a new interview with InStyle, Wesley says that a return to the franchise with a reboot or revival is a "hard pass" for the actor. That goes beyond The Vampire Diaries, as he clarifies that he's over vampire roles altogether.

As it is wont to do, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds returns to one of the franchise's oldest plot points in Season 2, Episode 4, "Among the Lotus Eaters." Long-time Superman fans may find the first minutes of My Adventures With Superman a bit off-putting. The soft, watercolor backgrounds, the sharp angles on the character designs, and the stuttered animation reveal the series’ debt to anime. As a young Clark Kent tries in vain to free his kite from a tree in his front yard, viewers will notice more similarities to My Hero Academia or Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba than to the Fleischer Bros. cartoons of the 1940s.
Suddenly, Clark notices a car spinning out of control, its driver distracted by the fussy child in the back seat. Without a second thought, Clark rushes to the car, stopping the vehicle before it slams into a tree. Clark stares at his hands in confusion, wondering how he suddenly gained such speed and strength. But we viewers know the answer: this is Superman, the Man of Steel we know and love.

Today, the success of Star Trek: The Next Generation seems like a foregone conclusion. However, in the 1980s, TV franchises never got a second act. Patrick Stewart was told it wouldn't last two seasons, and it might have if The Next Generation didn't introduce Guinan, played by Whoopi Goldberg. The mysterious bartender of Ten Forward lent credibility to a show that hadn't yet earned it. If not for her, Star Trek's second act may have ended before it began.
It may seem an overstatement to attribute the success of a brand like Star Trek to the long-serving host of The View. Invariably, dozens, possibly hundreds, of people were responsible for the successes and failures in those first seasons of The Next Generation. Series creator Gene Roddenberry was in declining health, and the people he brought in to help him only ended up alienating the creative minds who'd been with...

The realm of science fiction has given birth to so many great shows that have shaped the fabric of pop culture. Star Wars has moved from the big screen to the small, with mostly successful results. Star Trek has once again cemented its place on television with fare like Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Even new series like The Expanse and Silo have managed to become the topic of water cooler conversation. But there is one science fiction show that definitely deserves to be discussed with the same fervor: Babylon 5. Created by J. Michael Straczynski, Babylon 5 wasn't just a well-crafted science fiction series — it also provides an example of storytelling elements that have shaped modern television.

Many fans are eagerly awaiting the return of The Boys season 4 cast to continue the superhero mayhem in the hit series. The Boys season 3 left off with some big changes to the show's ensemble with some memorable new additions, a few shocking exits, and some intriguing new directions for several popular characters. The Boys season 4 is set to grow even more with new supes being added as Butcher and The Boys try to even the odds.
Set in a world in which superheroes exist and are corporate shills, The Boys follows Billy Butcher, Hughie Campbell, and the band of dysfunctional heroes who seek to put the supes in their place and stop the newly-reinvigorated (and deranged as ever) Homelander and Vought from taking over the world. While The Boys season 4 release date is not yet set, there have already been some exciting reveals of what to expect from this season's cast of characters.

The following contains spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2, Episode 4, "Among the Lotus Eaters," now streaming on Paramount+.
Despite its rich cast of inclusive characters, Star Trek didn't really become an ensemble series until around the third season of The Next Generation. On The Original Series, if Captain Kirk didn't save the day, Spock did. Strange New Worlds continues the ensemble tradition, but "Among the Lotus Eaters" gives Captain Christopher Pike a hero moment worthy of Kirk, Picard or any other important Starfleet captain.
One thing that Strange New Worlds does well, especially given only ten episodes, is highlighting the ensemble. Characters like LA'an Noonien Singh, Una Chin-Riley and others get their moment to shine. This often means Captain Pike is left riding shotgun to the character's story more central to the episode. For example, when an alien turns the ship into a living storybook for M'Benga's daughter,...

Star Trek is mostly known for its idealistic view of the future, but sometimes that utopian backdrop is used to tell heartbreaking stories. Every Trek series since Star Trek: The Original Series has had at least a couple of tearjerker episodes, from the classic "City on the Edge of Forever" to the more recent Strange New Worlds episode "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow." Several of the saddest episodes of Star Trek involve the death of a beloved character, but others tug on viewers' heartstrings in different ways.
The Star Trek franchise often combines science fiction with humor and mystery and sometimes even horror, and when the show commits to telling a certain kind of story, it doesn't hold back.
