Director/ writer/ actor Gary Marshall dies at age 81

On Tuesday July 19, Hollywood lost a giant in the world of comedy with the passing of beloved director/writer/producer/actor Gary Marshall at the age of 81. While most of the news outlets focused in on his considerable work in television (he practically owned Tuesday nights in the 1970’s with his “Happy Days” empire), this site would like to salute Mr. Marshall’s work on both sides of the camera.

After impressive writing credits on many of the classic sitcoms of the 1960’s, it was inevitable that the movie studios would tap him to contribute to several screenplays. The first was produced in 1968, a marriage comedy starring James Garner and Debbie Reynolds, How Sweet It Is. A youth-oriented romantic comedy starring Jacqueline Bisset, The Grasshopper, was released in 1970. TV triumphs quickly followed, so Marshall’s movie career was put on hold for more than a dozen years. 1982 was the year

Garry Marshall (1934-2016)

One of Hollywood's key figures passed away yesterday at the age of 81. His work in the past five years has consisted of a string of critically lambasted all star romcoms (Valentines Day, New Year's Eve, Mothers Day) and the day before he died one of the many actor he made famous (Scott Baio of Happy DaysJoanie Loves Chachi fame) embarrassed himself on national television at the Rnc. To put it bluntly, the last few years have not been kind but this is not the legacy that the beloved Garry Marshall deserves. We need to look a little further back. While he was never exactly a critic's darling - let's not rewrite history -- his work often resonated wildly with the public on screens both small and large. And that, my friends, is no small thing with or without a shelf of showbiz trophies.

He was a mammoth figure in comedy television,

Happy Days” star Henry Winkler credited him for launching his career, tweeting “Thank you for my professional life.

R.I.P. Garry Marshall

Filmmaker Garry Marshall has died at the age of 81.

The Bronx-born director/producer was also an acclaimed writer and character actor. Also in the 1980s he made the jump to directing with "The Flamingo Kid" his first hit. It was the one-two punch of megahits "Beaches" and "Pretty Woman" that made him a household name. Big Game movie review: small potatoes

A kid rescues the President. It sounds like a joke movie The Onion might invent to satirize Hollywood preposterousness, but I swear to god, it’s real. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Finnish filmmaker Jalmari Helander, who made the fiendishly dark and wonderfully bonkers Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale, goes Hollywood with a romp about a 12-year-old boy who rescues the President of the United States when Air Force One crashes in the Alps of Finland. There aren’t really mountains that look anything like the Alps in Finland, apparently, but substituting Bavaria for Scandinavia is still more plausible that this embarrassingly bad action comedy; it’s actually more like Helander went made-for-basic-cable rather than Hollywood. Young Oskari (Onni Tommila, who also appeared in Rare Exports) is supposed to be proving his worthiness to

Lindsay Lohan: I Handled Whitney Houston’s Body Bag During Community Service Sentence

Back in 2011 she was ordered to complete a four-month stint of community service with the La County Coroner and Lindsay Lohan claims she came across the late Whitney Houston's body bag along the way.

In a new interview with The Daily Telegraph, the “Georgia Rule” gal called the assignment “f’ed up and inappropriate,” noting that she was treated differently than the other folks on the team.

Lohan explained, “A lot of other people were meant to do it, and they were like, 'No, they can't handle it. Lohan can.' It's different for me than it would be for other people—like, no one would really have to work at the morgue in L.A. and roll a body bag for Whitney Houston."

"I know it sounds really dark and strange, but I thought it would be a lot worse. I kind of regulated a lot of it.
