A nice addition to the sci-fi/mecha action genre, “Knights of Sidonia” stands apart from the plethora of similar titles for a number of reasons, both technical and in terms of script and general presentation.

The year is 3994, when the Earth has already been destroyed by a race of aliens called Gauna. Sidonia is one of the ships that has managed to escape the destruction along with a population of 500,000 people. Due to the lack of resources, the people inside have turned to cloning, asexual reproduction and genetic engineering that allows them to photosynthesize, in order to survive in deep space. The Gauna however, are still hunting them, and thus,

Trailer For SciFi Anime Norageki

Coming soon from director Hiroaki Ando and writer Dai Sato is scifi anime Norageki. It's an intriguing match of talent. Ando is a frequent collaborator of both Katsuhiro Otomo and the folk at Studio 4C while Sato is one of the most reliable writers of high end scifi in the market, with both Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Ergo Proxy on his resume. Here's how the Anime News Network describes this one:In an isolated prison, a young man who seems conscientious, a sexy woman, a middle-aged ex-army man, an otaku girl, a mysterious old man and a cat are confined there. One day, they get freed after a blackout. In a strange way, all the prison guards have disappeared and they don't...

Full Trailer for Hiroaki Ando’s CG Anime Norageki!

The official website has been updated with a first full trailer for Hiroaki Ando’s CG anime project Norageki! which, contrary to the first teaser trailer actually shows some real footage instead of some early sketches. I’m still no fan of the rendering style, but at least this looks better than Bandai’s noodle project Freedom. Plus, Dai Sato (GitS:sac, Ergo Proxy) is responsible for the script, so this could really be good.

Norageki! is supposed to be released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc in Japan on March 25, 2011, most probably without English subtitles.

Synopsis:

In an isolated prison, a young man who seems conscientious, a sexy woman, a middle-aged ex-army man, an otaku girl, a mysterious old man and a cat are confined there. One day, they get freed after a blackout. In a strange way, all the prison guards have disappeared and they don’t know why they are released.

My Top 5 Favorite Animated Films of 2010

There weren’t a lot of animated films released this year that blew me away so it was fairly easy for me to come up with my top 5 list of my favorite animated movies of 2010. Check out my list below and let me know what you think. What were some of you favorite animated films of this year?

1. How To Train Your Dragon

This was by far the best and most entertaining animated movie of the year, and I was shocked that it came out of DreamWorks Animation because their films usually end up being disappointing. This movie was just flat out awesome though.

I loved the humor and tone of the story, it was a smart and heartfelt film that left you with a good feeling inside. I seriously don’t know how a person could watch this film and not like it. It’s a movie that everyone can enjoy,

First Teaser Trailer for CG Anime Norageki!

Bandai Visual has released the first teaser trailer for Norageki!, directed by Hiroaki Ando. The video doesn’t show much (read: a few frames!) actual footage of the CG animated short film, but the fact that Dai Sato (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Ergo Proxy, Wolf’s Rain etc.) wrote the script already got me pretty excited.

According to the official website, Norageki! will be released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc in Japan on March 25, 2011.

House Of Five Leaves review

House of Five Leaves was snapped up for Us distribution and online streaming by Funimation before it even began airing in Japan, as part of their deal to acquire selected titles in Fuji TV's Noitamina programming. The latest production by Manglobe, the studio behind the smash hit genre mashup Samurai Champloo and the dystopian sci-fi parable Ergo Proxy, House of Five Leaves is the animated adaptation of the manga of the same name. Yet despite the studio's pedigree, this is no easy sell, and even with a fairly conventional premise and setting in some ways it's actually a riskier proposition than either of their recent successes.

The story basically stems from the interaction between two central characters. First is Akitsu, a hapless ronin down on his luck - shy, self-conscious and withdrawn to the point of being phobic, he struggles to find (let alone keep) employment as a bodyguard

Latino beat animation? Girl fighting anime style in Michiko To Hatchin

Ok, so we don't really do much anime here but I couldn't pass this one up. It's very stylish and the first teaser for it just set the tone, but this one has actual footage from the series and it looks nothing short of fantastic. It's the third original anime project from Samurai Champloo and Ergo Proxy's Manglobe Studio. "Michiko Malandro is a free-spirited sexy diva who destroys a supposedly inescapable prison fortress, while Hana 'Hatchin' Morenos is a girl fleeing her strict foster parents. The two join forces on an improbable escape to freedom, with a woman named Atsuko Jackson in hot pursuit." The series premiers in Japan in October, bring on the subs! We have both the teaser and the trailer embedded after the break.
