Even though both'Mary Tyler Moore', and husband,Grant Tinker), were very good friends of 'Betty White' and her husband, game show host, Allen Ludden), the actual participation of Ms White in the series was not definite - and the script even called for a 'Betty White-type'. Casting Ms White was not a sure thing, as it was felt that if problems arose, it would be awkward with Ms White being a friend of Ms Moore and Mr Tinker.

Not only were Betty White and her husband, Allen Ludfen close friends of both Ms Moore and Mr Tinker, Ms White was a huge fan of the series, itself (so much so, she and her husband were regulars at the filming of each episode of the series)..
