As Sally drops by Rhoda's apartment just before they are scheduled to go out to dinner, Sally announces that she is in a vulnerable state since she just found out that her pilot ex-husband is getting remarried. Regardless, Rhoda suggests they go to Rick's for dinner, despite it being a notorious pick-up place. There, Rhoda laments the fact of running into one of her least favorite people, Joe's best friend Charlie Burke, a womanizer who Rhoda never understood why he and Joe were/are friends. Although she can see that he is a womanizer, Sally falls for him. Even though Sally is not his first choice for a date, Charlie does ask Sally out to an important social function, to which Sally accepts. The situation that arises following that function places Rhoda, Sally and Charlie on tenterhooks with each other.
