Here’s What’s Leaving Hulu in February

As a new month looms closer, so does the deadline to watch some of your favorite movies on Hulu. The streaming service has announced which titles will be departing in February 2018, and while it’s a pretty short list, there are a couple of noteworthy films that you should definitely seek out. Chief among them is the 2007 comedy Hot Rod, starring Andy Samberg. The film marked the feature debut of the Lonely Island trio, and while their subsequent projects like MacGruber and Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping are better, Hot Rod still has its moments and delightfully surreal/…

Hot Rod is 10 Years Old: 10 Things You Didn’t Know about This Classic Comedy

It’s hard to believe but the movie Hot Rod came out about a decade ago. Andy Samberg was still trying to become a well-known comic on the Hollywood scene and was making some serious headway. This film didn’t really do much at the box office but it did enough for Samberg’s career to elevate him in a way that saw his career really start to take off. From that point on most people knew about him and were content to sit and watch. Since then he’s been on the rise in TV and in film, and has done fairly well

The Lonely Island on the Creation, Release, and Legacy of ‘Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping’

In hindsight, it seems crazy it took this long to get a Lonely Island movie, but Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping was well worth the wait. After making their mark on SNL, helping to usher the show into the digital age, Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer entered the feature film world in various combinations with movies like Hot Rod, MacGruber, and The Watch. But it wasn’t until Popstar that the three were granted the opportunity to create a feature film from the ground up, together, and make it whatever they wanted. Producer Judd Apatow helped shepherd the …

Seth Rogen and the Lonely Island Say They’re Working on a Fyre Festival–Like Movie

Seth Rogen and the Lonely Island Say They’re Working on a Fyre Festival–Like Movie
By now you’ll have read all about Fyre Festival, the misbegotten music fest whose immediate downfall has provided countless people with their weekly schadenfreude fix. Perhaps less amused with the development than the rest of us — how could you do this, Ja!? — are Seth Rogen and the Lonely Island, who seem mildly annoyed that life is imitating art they’ve yet to create: “This seems like a good time to mention the movie we are making with @thelonelyisland about a music festival that goes Horribly Wrong,” Rogen tweeted yesterday.

The Lonely Island chimed in with further confirmation: “For real, thinking about suing #FyreFestival for stealing our idea.” Said trio — which consists of Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone — is responsible for last year’s “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping,” 2007’s “Hot Rod

Hot Rod at 10: looking back at an underappreciated film

Gem Wheeler Aug 15, 2017

2007s' Hot Rod arrives at its tenth birthday - and there's plenty here to celebrate...

Stuntman extraordinaire Rod Kimble is about to face the challenge of his life. If he can jump fifteen buses on his motorbike – that’s one more than Evel Knievel; you can check, online – and raise the $50,000 required for his stepdad Frank’s life-saving surgery, he’ll be acclaimed as a hero. Far more importantly, he’ll also be able to kick Frank’s ass. Rod’s been mocked and bullied by his stepdad for a long time. This is his chance to prove himself as a man, gain Frank’s respect, and win the heart of his next-door neighbour, Denise. There’s only one problem: Rod’s never actually managed to perform a stunt successfully. Ancestors, protect him…

Since its release in 2007, Hot Rod’s gradually attained the well-deserved cult classic status

The Lonely Island: saluting 15 of their finest moments

Gem Wheeler Jan 12, 2017

Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone are comedy trio The Lonely Island. Here are just some of their finest songs and sketches...

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping was – yep, it’s time to call it - the funniest film of 2016. For those who blinked a little too long and didn’t catch it on its brief appearance in UK cinemas, the DVD release is your chance to find out what you’ve missed: a hilarious parody of current pop music’s excesses that blends acerbic criticism of predatory gossip shows and social media mobs with a sweet story of three feuding rappers struggling to mend their friendship. The fact that this touching tale also features Seal fending off a pack of wolves, Justin Timberlake dressed as a fish, and a bagpiper playing a lament at a beloved pet turtle’s Viking-inspired funeral comes as no surprise

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping review

Mark Harrison Published Date Wednesday, August 31, 2016 - 05:44

Richard Lester's A Hard Day's Night is one of the most influential movies of all time, pioneering a genre out of Beatlemania and inventing the language that has proliferated in music videos over the last 50 years. However, most modern music acts don't go down the Hard Day's Night/Spice World route in their cinematic tie-ins and concert documentaries (in 3D!) are more common than narrative features.

If we had to bet on any modern music act reviving the band movie as the Beatles had it, it would be the comedy group The Lonely Island, who first came to prominence through Saturday Night Live's Digital Shorts and have released a catalogue of catchy numbers with hilarious music videos. But for Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer, it would have been almost too easy to loosely string together a number of

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping review – boybands, barbequed

SNL alumnus Andy Samberg plays a horribly naff, deluded rapper in this often funny parody skewering moppet music stars

Here is an amiably goofy, often funny music mockumentary – conceived on very familiar lines – devised by The Lonely Island, the comedy troupe Andy Samberg formed with his high school friends Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone. In the last decade, they have become known for their viral online videos for Us TV’s Saturday Night Live and also a funny feature-film, Hot Rod (2007).

Here, they play a horribly naff hip-hop boy band Style Boyz, who acrimoniously split, leaving Conner – played by Samberg – to pursue a super-hot solo career as rapper, appallingly named Conner4Real, while his two amigos languish in various forms of humiliating obscurity. What that inadvertently reveals about the famous Samberg and less famous Lonely Island colleagues I couldn’t say.

10 films to beat the 2016 blockbuster fatigue

Mark Harrison Aug 1, 2016

Fed up of big blockbusters right now? Here are some smaller movie treats to be found in August in UK cinemas...

Around this time of the year, we like to shine a spotlight on the slightly smaller films coming out after most of the box office juggernauts have been and gone. But with each annual feature, we've noticed that the year is filling up with blockbusters more and more. The year's first comic book movie was February's Deadpool, a surprise box office smash and Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice got 2016's blockbuster season started much earlier than usual.

We're late enough in this elongated season that August will find the blockbuster schedule repeating itself - Ben Affleck's Batman will be back on screen for a cameo in DC Movies' Suicide Squad, Disney follows The Jungle Book with a live-action remake of Pete's Dragon, and Ricky Gervais

‘Alone Together’ Pilot from Andy Samberg’s Lonely Island Ordered by Freeform
Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping” didn’t exactly do gangbusters at the box office, but fans of the Lonely Island comedy troupe/production company have found a lot to like in the music-industry satire. Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer will next have their hand in the pilot for “Alone Together,” a new scripted comedy just ordered by Freeform.

Esther Povitsky and Benji Afalo are set to star as in the half-hour pilot, which concerns their two characters’ platonic friendship as they go about their daily lives in Los Angeles; they’ll also write and co-executive produce alongside Eben Russell. “This is a fiercely funny look at young adults who are unapologetically themselves while blazing their own paths, which fits nicely into the tradition already set by our current slate,” said Karey Burke,

Mark Harrison Jul 1, 2016

Need a laugh? Here's our guide to 25 comedies that are on Netflix UK now, and are well worth your time...

Putting aside all of the chunter about VPNs and rising subscription costs for a moment, there are more hidden gems to be discovered on Netflix UK than you might expect, and we've been combing through the streaming site's current catalogue to find some of the most underappreciated comedies on offer.

We've come up with this fairly broad selection of films that varies on several fronts. We've picked out a mix of belly laughers and dark comedies, with a couple of dramedies thrown in for good measure. They're not all big Hollywood comedies, but neither are they all films that you're hearing about for the first time, though we've tried to order them according to how well known they may or may not be. What they all have

"Happy Endings" Creators Plan "Ghost Bros."

"Happy Endings" producers Josh Bycel and Jonathan Fener are teaming with "Saturday Night Live" creator Lorne Michaels for the horror comedy film "Ghost Bros." at Paramount Pictures and Broadway Video.

Starting in the 1980s, the story centers on two hapless Fraternity brothers who die inside their fraternity house. They end up sticking around to haunt the present day owners.

Bycel and Fener penned the screenplay while Michaels ("Mean Girls," "Hot Rod") is producing. It's expected one or more SNL cast members will headline the comedy, but no announcement has been made yet.

Ghost Bros. Comedy Coming from SNL Creator Lorne Michaels

Ghost Bros. Comedy Coming from SNL Creator Lorne Michaels
The Neighbors concept is getting a supernatural twist in the upcoming comedy Ghost Bros. Josh Bycel and Jonathan Fener, best known for their work on the TV sitcom Happy Endings, are responsible for the screenplay. Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels is producing the horror comedy for Paramount under his Broadway Video banner.

Ghost Bros. kicks off in the 80s, and centers on two hapless Fraternity brothers who die inside their fraternity house. They end up sticking around to haunt the present day owners. According to The Tracking Board, Sam Grey is the executive producer for Broadway. Alana Mayo and Gabby Canton are overseeing the project for Paramount.

Popstar Review: Lonely Island Returns in Hilarious Fashion

Popstar Review: Lonely Island Returns in Hilarious Fashion
Back in 2005, longtime childhood friends Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer were all put on the map with their now-iconic Saturday Night Live short Lazy Sunday. They also came together with their first feature film, 2007's Hot Rod, which Schaffer directed and Samberg and Taccone starred in, but it didn't fare too well with fans and critics alike (like me). They each branched out and did their own things after leaving Saturday Night Live, but now they're back, setting their satirical sights on the music industry in Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, hitting theaters on June 3. While it can be a tad uneven at times, Popstar marks a hilarious return for the Lonely Island crew.

In many ways, a movie like Popstar that turns the music industry on its ear is natural progression for the Lonely Island crew, whose "digital shorts" are often long-form music videos themselves. The entire

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping Review

By way of musical mockumentary, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping delivers hilarity, stupidity, and a whole lot of other expected “-ity’s.” This is textbook SNL-alumn scripting. Direct parallels are drawn to Jon M. Chu’s Justin Bieber: Never Say Never, The Lonely Island drops some raunchy new material, and celebrity cameos fight for top-billing. We’re talking about a movie that – in one moment – captures a fish-costume-wearing Justin Timberlake shredding guitar riffs while Tim Meadows plays saxophone and Michael Bolton backs up Andy Samberg (who is rapping about his silly thoughts). Take that comment for Exactly what it is, and prepare for The Lonely Island’s latest bit of glorious absurdity.

Andy Samberg stars as Connor4Real, a pop sensation who found tremendous solo success after his original band, the Style Boyz, parted ways. With bandmate Lawrence (Akiva Schaffer) gone, Connor and his DJ, Owen (Jorma Taccone), tear

The Preview Reel: Will Turtles Rule the Pond?

Welcome to the fifth week of CinemaNerdz’s “Preview Reel,” where we look at the week’s upcoming wide release movies. As the calendar turns from May to June, we have three very different films aiming for different demographics. The younger/nostalgic crowd will get Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, the romantics have Me Before You, and the comedy fans have Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. It seems like there is something for everybody but, is any of these worth your time? Let’s break them down.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows

What we are excited about:

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was a surprise hit for Paramount in 2014, and while the film had its fair share of haters, this particular writer enjoyed the silliness of that installment. The trailers for the sequel seem to indicate that this film is doubling down on the silliness

Lonely Island Goes Wild in Popstar Trailer #2

Lonely Island Goes Wild in Popstar Trailer #2
Just over a year ago, Universal Pictures announced that production had gotten under way on a secret project from the comedic trio known as The Lonely Island, which is comprised of Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer. Very little was known about the project at the time, but it was eventually revealed to be a parody of the pop music world entitled Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, which is set for release on June 3. Back in March, we got our first look at this comedy with the red band trailer, but now we have the second trailer that is suitable for all ages.

Universal Pictures' Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping goes behind the scenes as singer/rapper Conner4Real (Samberg) faces a crisis of popularity after his sophomore album flops, leaving his fans, sycophants and rivals all wondering what to do when he's no longer the dopest star of all.
