Quotes

Seth Larker: [Questions why Julie is going after her husband's killer] Julie, I don't mean to step out of line but I've known you and Sid ever since you first came here. I watched you fight the land for Sid and you lost. Now, I don't know what you had before, but these past few years, you didn't love him. Not really.

to Mexico and back

Barbara Stanwyck plays Julie, the widow of a rancher who's the only one with water during a drought. When he's slain after refusing to give away the water for free, she goes after the suspected killer. David Janssen is Seth, the rancher's best friend, who goes along when Julie tracks the suspect to Mexico. Barbara Stanwyck is really fantastic. At age 51 to Janssen's 27, she actually looks great next to him. Janssen did a lot of westerns in the 1950s when they were popular and he's very believable as a cowboy and is an appealing one at that. Barbara Stanwyck thought so too. She reportedly said "wow" after the director called "cut" after their scene in the mudhole.

I liked this episode. I liked that Barbara Stanwyck is loyal and wants justice for her husband even though she no longer likes the person that he has become. I liked that she looks pretty in a fancy dress during dinner with her husband. But then after the murder of her husband, she and David Janssen's character get on their horses and gallop all the way to Mexico to look for the suspect to bring him back for justice. Harsh settlement life made her tough and she looks the part. Like all westerns, there are plenty of trigger-happy men and women here. It works well.
