Josh rides into a small Mexican village during siesta time. As he drinks at the water fountain, a man approaches him which causes Josh to draw his gun. The man is Rafael Guerra who has asked Josh to come for a job paying 500 pesos. Rafael takes Josh to his house outside of town where he explains the situation. He is the school teacher and his pregnant wife is about to deliver. Mexican villages have a La Curandera or healing woman who everyone believes in but him. She has decorated the front of his house but Rafael wants her nowhere near his wife. He is willing to pay Josh to keep her away. The midwife Esperanza runs out saying it is time to get La Curandera. Rafael tries to stop her but she leaves. As time draws close for the birth, Rafael sends Josh for the midwife after Josh gives him a small 4 shot derringer. In town Rafael's father-in-law's henchmen decide to take Josh back to the border and that night the village takes La Curandera to the house.

Nolan Will Grab Your Attention Here!
10 October 2010 | by See all my reviews

Josh is south of the border, trying to help a Mexican man who is about to be a father and does want the "help" of a "curadera", an occult-type figure in which the people have a belief in where he lives.

He hires Josh to keep the curandera away but the real trouble are the man's relatives who - by force of the gun if necessary - are going to make sure that "witch woman" comes into the house and does her thing before the birth. So, Steve and this father-to-be, wind up battling the whole small town. The odds don't look good.

Jeanette Nolan, who plays "La Curandera," is hardly an Hispanic woman (although the rest of the cast is) but she is very effective, however. Nolan, with the aid of a lot of ghost-like makeup, is genuinely creepy and interesting to watch and hear. Nolan had a long and impressive acting career, working all the way up to the year she died.
