Plot Summary

The Chris Hale wagon train is reaching Fort Pierce after traveling through some of the most barren and desolate country so far on the trip. Everyone is anxious to arrive there for some downtime and celebrations. In addition Chris Hale is good friends with Captain Paul Winters and his wife Nancy who are stationed there. Due to orders from Washington limiting the manpower available, Colonel Lathrop denies Chris Hale's request for a military escort for the wagon train as it travels through hostile Indian territory when it leaves Fort Pierce. However, he does order Captain Winters to send his wife with Hale on the train. As the only woman at the fort, Nancy Winters is drowning her fear about her husband's safety, and her sorrow over the death of her infant child, in alcohol. Lathrop finds her attitude and behavior distracting to the discipline of Captain Winters who is from an old military family with a long tradition to uphold. Written by rbecker28
