Davey Baxter along with his sick mother and younger brother Wally are traveling to California to settle supposedly prime land to which they have a deed. The young Davey is engaged to a young seventeen year old Susan Forbes who is traveling with her parents. Davey, a dreamer, is constantly making plans for the land he wants to farm but he has yet to see. First, however, the wagon train must cross a high narrow pass that has been partially blocked by a landslide. They clear as much as they can but the path at one point is very narrow and rocky. The experienced Charlie Wooster takes his wagon through. Davey is second and when a rear wheel is trapped in a rut, he loses control of the horses causing the wagon to tumble off the side. Davey's mother is killed but Davey is alive but his right arm is crushed and trapped under the wagon. Using ropes Chris and Duke are lowered to them and rescue Davey and recover his mother's body.
