The lighter that Aaron (Harry Hamlin) used to ignite the gas was the same lighter that Logan (Jason Dohring) said was his mother's. It was from his grandfather after the war, who was a prisoner and got it engraved with "free at last". The fact that it was not in her purse but on the dresser was supposedly a sign that she was still alive.
