- Richard Bellamy, who has been in considerable financial distress since the death of Lady Marjorie, finds himself at the center of a insider trading firestorm in his capacity as a member of Parliament.
- Richard's financial difficulties may come to an end when a chance meeting at his club gives him a tip on a stock that should increase considerably in value. He's told that Cartwright Engineering will soon received a large contract and is a sure bet. The tipster receives Richard's assurance that the source of this information will remain confidential. The stock tip proves to be a good one and Richard makes a pretty penny. His troubles begin when a Parliamentary opponent, Henry Pritchett, begins to suggest that Richard used inside information from his days at the Admiralty and the Government initiates an inquiry. Richard is true to his word and refuses to divulge the source of his stock tip leading to trouble with the Conservative Party. The resolution to the situation is not entirely to Richard's liking however.—garykmcd
- Richard Bellamy is unwittingly given an insider's stock tip from a former colleague. In return, Richard's chum asks that he not disclose how he came about this information and Richard gives his word of honour. His investment is tripled within a month and a cloud of suspicion wreaks havoc on Richard's political career and the Bellamy household. All of this can be settled if Richard divulges the man's identity, but Richard is duty bound to his pledge. Hazel figures a way to clear Richard's name, his source is revealed and Richard is livid with his new daughter-in-law.—gaelicguy
- With James happily married to Hazel and Richard's income severely reduced, the reality of his recent widowhood begins to manifest itself more deeply. He's no longer the "Master of the House and feels very much like a boarder in what is now James's home. Depressed and in a bad case of ennui, Richard tries to spend as much time as possible at his club. One August afternoon, Richard meets an old colleague, Jack Challen, who has left politics and gone into the burgeoning motorcar business, Cartwright Engineering, run by Challen's father-in-law. Challen offers his condolences, having heard of Lady Marjorie's death and feels deeply for Richard, who clearly is living in reduced circumstances. Before the two old acquaintances part company, Challen advises Richard to purchase shares in Cartwright. When Richard tells Challen that the stock market is a mystery to him and that he never invests, Challen warns him that he'll regret not following his advice - but there's one caveat - Challen asks Richard NEVER to disclose how he came about this tip. Richard assures him that he'd never do such a thing - on his word of honor. Back at Eaton Place, Hazel overhears Richard on the telephone with his broker, purchasing 5000 pounds sterling - the last of the money Richard received from James for the lease on the Eaton Place townhouse. Richard muses that it's a risk, but one that will perhaps pay off in dividends, Indeed, his investment is tripled within a month to the delight his family and the servants. However, once Parliament is back in session, MP Richard Pritchett raises questions about the company's (and Richard's ) new found wealth, suggesting that Richard had been tipped off that the Cartwright had received a lucrative government contract. A cloud of suspicion wreaks havoc on Richard's political career and the Bellamy household. A furious Sir Geoffrey Dillon, along with James and Hazel, implore Richard to disclose Challen's name, but Richard refuses. The downstairs is in turmoil, with reporters at the back door and a letter from Ruby's mother demanding she leaves the Bellany employ. Hazel figures a way to clear Richard's name and sends Hudson to his club to uncover Challen's identity, Richard is cleared of all allegations, but it's cold comfort. He figures out what Hazel did and is livid with her, warning his new daughter-in-law that she had better mend her ways and then demands she leave his study.
