William Froug had Richard De Roy rewrite the George Clayton Johnson teleplay "Tick of Time" before it was aired as Ninety Years Without Slumbering (1963). Johnson was displeased with this and ultimately never reconciled with Froug, and never contributed to The Twilight Zone (1959) again.
As mentioned by Ed Wynn's character, the episode's title "Ninety Years Without Slumber" is taken from a song: "My Grandfather's Clock". Written in 1876 by Henry Clay Work, the song's lyrics are considered to have coined the term "grandfather clock" and reflect the plight of this episode. The song's tune can also be heard playing at times throughout the episode.
Sam Forstmann was born in 1887.
