Faced with mounting casualties and aircraft losses, General Savage devises a new tactic for protecting his formations by removing bombs from some of his planes and outfitting them with heavier guns and more ammunition - dubbed Operation Porcupine. Before he can implement the new plan, however, he receives a visit from Senator Johnson, who is not only vehemently biased against the airwar strategy, but also holds a personal animosity toward Savage. Johnson is threatening to campaign to stop all long range bombing, as well as to find any excuse to drag Savage down with it. As if that weren't enough, Savage is also faced with a soldier who is apparently reluctant to marry a British girl who he has put "in the family way". Written by alexk-6

Did You Know?

The "porcupine" aircraft are loosely based on Project V-139 that turn 25 B-17Fs into YB-40 gunships. The gunships had an extra top turret, twin mount .50 cal machine guns in the waist positions and a chin turret under the the bomardier's position in the nose. Each gunship was heavily armored. They were built by Vega and Douglas Aircraft. Some of these modified in England. It proved to be a failure due to the fact the gunships were slower than B-17Fs after they dropped their bombs. Some of the modifications were carried on in later models such as the chin turret. See more »
