In reality she was captured by Deputy U.S. Marshal Bass Reeves for horse theft. She was tried and sentenced as stated in the show's ending narrative.
Belle Starr (1848-1889) married her first husband, Jim Reed (1845-1874), in 1866; she married Sam Starr (1857?-1886) in 1880, when she was 32 years old. In 1883, Belle and Sam were arrested by Bass Reeves ([1838-1910] the first Black deputy US marshal west of the Mississippi), and tried before "The Hanging Judge" Isaac Parker.
