Filler, but Ultimately Masterful Dialogue and Charming Moments Entertain

While little to nothing is ever touched upon again from this episode, I found the writing to make me burst out laughing more than almost any SG-1 episode. Rewatching this yet again after all these years, there isn't much better than quit-witted quipping and jabs between the best team in sci-fi. There's even a bit of dialogue Siler gets that made me burst out with laughter when Robert is being all skeptical about the skull.

Robert: "Teleportation Device..? What do you think?" Siler: "I think you're gonna get fired."

It's moments like this and so many others that help world build and make the characters relatable. Television is not very good at making you relate to the characters on the screen anymore and somehow we have strayed from the masterful dialogue that 20+ episode seasons blessed us with until the 2010s. Now everything is 6 episodes and only focuses on a single plotline, never allowing its cast to grow on the audience.

The writers for Stargate SG-1 were some of the best science fiction writing we will ever have and they poured their hearts into the character relationships here.

It's not a perfect episode overall and does not drive the plot forward, and with subpar match-moving and CG, some things do stick out quite harshly even in 480p.

That said, there is some of the best dialogue in the series here and it's a welcome episode every time.

    The Crystal Skull

The SG1 finds a huge pyramid with high level of radiation in a planet but the MALP is too big to get close to a crystal skull on a pedestal. Daniel explains to the team that his grandfather Nicholas "Nick" Ballard had found a unique crystal skull in Belize and claimed that it possessed the power of teleporting to see aliens the one that looked at its eyes. However he was discredited by the academic community since he was not able to repeat the experiment. The SG-1 decides to go to the pyramid to investigate the skull despite the level of the increasing radiation. They are affected by the radiation and when Daniel looks at the eyes of the skull, he is involved by a field of energy and Teal'c shoots the skull. Daniel vanishes and the SG-1 has to return to the SGC due to the radiation. However he is actually invisible for them near the skull. While they are recovering from the effects of the radiation at the SGC, Teal'c decides to return to the pyramid to get the skull and bring it to the SGC. Daniel comes with him but stays invisible for everybody. Sam suggests that Dr. Nicholas Ballard should be consulted but Dr. Fraiser informs that he is interned in a psychiatric facility in Oregon. But Sam, Jack and Teal'c decide to visit Nick and bring him to the SGC as the last chance to bring Daniel back. Will they succeed?

"Crystal Skull" is a highly entertaining adventure of SG-1. Nick is a nice character and it would be great to see him again in the future episodes. My vote is seven.

    good teal'c episode

So this episode rules. Lotta great 90s cgi cheese. Cool vibe. But i write this only to say: even though this episode is mostly about Daniel, there's a lot of really good tiny Teal'c moments. Like, his timing and the editing just make his small moments really funny and nice. There's always the good ol squints-tilts-head-frown thing that he does that for some reason is extra perfect in this episode. Also, anytime you get to see him in the real world wearing his cowboy hat is always funny. We also see him trying to take charge and improvise in the same scene which killed me. Maybe i just noticed it more in this episode, but either way. Fun time.

    Filler

Filler episode, didn't develop characters or have an exceptionally interesting plot. The new character was a quick introduction and then out again in typical SG fashion.

    • Trivia
The giant pyramid containing the crystal skull is described by Major Carter to be "over 1000 meters tall" (approximately 3,300 feet tall). By modern-day comparison, the Burj Khalifa Tower in Dubai - the tallest man-made structure ever built - stands at only 828 meters (2,717 feet) tall.
    • Goofs
Daniel is intended to not have any physical form. People can walk right through Daniel, and he can walk through them. However, Daniel can be seen sitting on various objects throughout the SGC, leaning on walls, and casting shadows.
    • Quotes

Jack O'Neill: Look, I'm sick of layin' around. Help me up.

Teal'c: Dr. Frasier believes you're not strong enough to undertake such a mission.

      Jack O'Neill: Yeah, whatever.

[O'Neill gets out of his bed and promptly falls down]

Teal'c: Dr. Frasier is usually correct in such matters.
