- Encountering a never before-studied space phenomenon, a galactic, black hole-like, non-transparent void, Picard throws caution in the wind to examine as close as possible. The Enterpise is suddenly absorbed, and unable to leave again, as the space time continuum seems completely disrupted inside. Others vessels are found inside, proving the effects get ever worse, including a hostile Romulan war ship. A beaming-down party gets caught in a wreck, posing another dilemma. Then superior being Nagilum shows itself and changes all the rules.—KGF Vissers
- Riker and Worf complete their combat training exercises on the Holodeck. While on route to the Mogana quadrant, the Enterprise comes across a unique phenomenon for the first time. It appears as a black void, with no matter or energy readings of any kind. Data says that no Federation star ships have ever encountered a phenomenon like this previously. Even Deanna is getting nothing from the void. No feelings, no emotions, nothing. Picard gets close to investigate and fires a probe into the void. The probe disappears as soon as it enters the void. The 2nd probe is launched with a full sensor array, and it meets the same result.
As the Enterprise approaches the entity, it moves and envelops the ship completely.
Worf is reminded of an old Klingon legend of a black entity that was known to devour entire vessels. The Enterprise cannot move out of the void and no communications with the outside world work. The Ship is moving at increasing warps, yet on the screen it appears to be completely static. They figure out that they have just been going around in circles, even though all their instruments show they are travelling straight. They had dropped a beacon in space to mark their position and when they traveled ahead, they found themselves returning back to the position of the beacon.
They find however that they are unable to leave and when a Romulan vessel suddenly appears, Picard and the crew realize that something is amiss. They destroy the Romulan ship with a single torpedo, after they fire on the Enterprise. There is no debris from the Romulan ship. Another ship appears and it's the USS Yamato. There is no response from the Yamato on hailing frequencies. Riker and Worf go over to investigate, but land on separate locations of the ship, instead of the bridge. They cannot communicate back with the Enterprise and the transporter room has lost their lock on the away team so they cannot be beamed back. Riker figures this is not a Federation ship as the material is beyond Federation tech.
Meanwhile Enterprise gets an opening to escape from the entity, but Picard won't leave Riker and Worf. The escape opening vanishes, but then Picard can beam back Riker and Worf. Pulaski and Deanna suggest that this seems some sort of a lab experiment. Enterprise is the rat.
Picard stops responding to the stimuli and that's when the entity reveals itself. Nagilum is curious about humans, about gender, about sex and death. Nagilum kills one of Picard's helmsmen to understand the concept of death. It tells Picard that it intends to use 30-50% of his crew to satisfy his curiosity and amass information on every aspect of death. The Nagilum puts no value to human life whatsoever.
Unable to move or leave and facing a lifetime as a prisoner of Nagilum (Earl Boen), who wishes to experiment on them, Captain Picard decides there can be only one solution to set them free. He intends to destroy the Enterprise. The timer is set for 20 mins.
Deanna says that decision to self-destruct may not change Nagilum's mind. Plus, if there is a chance that half of the crew can survive then it is wrong for Picard to force everyone to die. Picard figures that this is not Deanna, but Nagilum (Since Deanna would never address him as Jean-Luc). Nagilum vanishes Nagilum releases the Enterprise and Picard cancels the auto-destruct.
