    • Trivia
After the first jump, LaForge says that the Enterprise has traveled a distance of 2.7 million light years, ending up on the far side of the Triangulum galaxy, a.k.a. M-33. The distance to M-33 was very uncertain at the time this episode was made, with estimates varying between 2 and 3 million light years. Interestingly, the best modern estimates are indeed concentrated around 2.7-2.8 million light years.
    • Goofs
According to Data, the subspace message sent to Starfleet from the M-33 Galaxy would take 51 years, 10 months, 9 weeks and 16 days to reach Earth. Unless the lengths of months, weeks or days has changed considerably by the 24th century, or the relation of each unit to one other is different in subspace, this very impressive-sounding time frame can just as easily be expressed with 52 years, 2 weeks and 3 or 4 days.
    • Quotes

Lt. Commander Data: Captain, we're here. Why not avail ourselves of this opportunity for study? There is a giant protostar here in the process of forming. No other vessel has been out this far.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard: Spoken like a true Starfleet graduate.

The first truly good episode of TNG
This is the first good episode of TNG, but it still doesn't meet the promise of its successors.

An arrogant warp drive expert, who may or may not be what he says he is, boards the Enterprise, and enjoys pontificating about things that go beyond the understanding of the crew.

At the same time, his mysterious assistant befriends Wesley Crusher, and they try to troubleshoot an apparent malfunction in the warp drive that propels The Enterprise far beyond its capabilities.

Many people deride this episode in part because they find the character of Wesley Crusher annoying, While I find that to be a very reasonable attitude, in retrospect, it is unfair to judge an entire episode based on one poorly written character.

In the end, it is a fairly good episode, that should be watched, since it is consequential to the rest of the series.
