Storyline

With the Enterprise in spacedock undergoing repairs following its encounter with the Borg, several members of the crew have the opportunity for shore leave. Captain Picard returns to his home village in Labarre (France) to visit his older brother Robert, sister-in-law Marie and nephew René. He hasn't been home for 20 years and he has always had a difficult relationship with his brother who considered him a know-it-all; the captain viewed his brother as a bully. They ultimately find a way to get along. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Worf welcomes his adoptive parents, CPO Sergey and Helena Rozhenko, on board the Enterprise. Worf still feels the sting of his dishonor on the Klingon homeworld and his parents know he is hurting. As for Wesley Crusher, his mother gives him an old holographic recording his father made just after Wesley was born. Written by garykmcd

Trivia

While not written or filmed until well after the completion of Star Trek: The Next Generation: The Best of Both Worlds: Part II (1990), "Family", popular in its own right, has come to be seen as the third part of "The Best of Both Worlds" serial. It is one of the few times where characters' families are introduced (Worf's parents, Picard's family). Although the relaxed, peaceful, episode feels like a 180-degree opposition to the adventurous, warlike serial, part of its point is to put in context what the Borg were threatening - loved ones, as well as civilization and planets. Goofs

In most cases, Robert's name is pronounced in French ("Robare"), as it should be. Yet when Jean-Luc tells his brother about his ordeal with the Borg, he once uses the English pronunciation "Robburt". See more »

Quotes

René Picard: I know who you are.
Captain Jean-Luc Picard: Then you have the advantage.
René Picard: You're my nephew, Jean-Luc, from the Starship Enterprise.
Captain Jean-Luc Picard: Then you must be my uncle René.
René Picard: I'm not your uncle. It's the other way around.
Captain Jean-Luc Picard: Too bad. I rather enjoyed the idea.

TNG at its best

Great and touching stories about Picard and Worf visiting with their families. One of my all time favorite episodes... perfect except for the contrived Wesley & Jack Crusher subplot.
