Odo is searching for his people on his home planet. What a depressing plot. It's fitting because the real plot is hidden: The Federation needs to be dismantled. Q tried everything on the simultaneously running The Next Generation show to turn their crew real. It didn't work. Captain Picard, in the last TNG episodes, gets judged (again) in front of a court headed by Q, and it does nothing. From here on, Deep Space Nine can only witness the destruction of the Federation - from a (originally) Cardassian station. DS9's producers, from now on, only have to worry about picking episode titles that sound the most depressing. The rest is silly wars. The wars don't even have to make sense, and still feel real, because Q is established. Q won't care about sense any longer. And it STILL might feel real.

- TriviaAfter deciding not to make T'Rul a recurring character (see below), the producers also decided not to use the cloaking device beyond "The Search, Part I". Indeed, they actually planned to mention early in the season that the cloak had been returned to the Romulans. So certain were they that it wouldn't be used again that they even informed production designer Herman F. Zimmerman and director of photography Jonathan West, and told them that they didn't need to design an elaborate lighting rig because the dimming effect seen when the ship is under cloak would only ever be seen once. As such, Zimmerman's set design didn't allow room for West to construct a rig which could contain the set-up necessary for both normal lighting and cloaked lighting. Instead, West had his crew simply manually change the lights for the scenes under cloak. Of course, only a few episodes later, in Defiant (1994), the cloak was once again employed, and many times after that, but the set and the lighting rig were never redesigned, so every time the ship went under cloak, West had to have his crew manually change all of the lights, something which he was quite annoyed about.
- GoofsAs soon as Odo got to the bridge, the Jem'Hadar should have halted their attack, since they revered the Founders as deities and wouldn't dare harm one.
- Quotes
Ornithar: Our only contact with the Dominion has been through the Vorta. I have no idea who they report to; all I know is that the Vorta say to do something, and you do it.
Commander Sisko: Why?
Ornithar: Because if you do not, they will send in the Jem'Hadar. And then you die.
