After the Saratoga left Demios to proceed to Ixion, the 58th wouldn't have known their position in order to aim the communication dish to maintain radio contact.
    • Quotes

Lt. Vanessa Damphousse: Saratoga, this is Demios. Request response to request for air cover. Situation deteriorating... Many units in retreat... Airfield in jeopardy of being taken. Many casualties, request response.

Lt. Price: Demios, this is the Saratoga...

Commodore Glen van Ross: [interrupts the LT to speak to the troops being left behind] Lieutenant. Marines, this is Commodore Ross of the USS Saratoga. We remain proud of you. Due to security reasons, I am unable to explain this painful directive. Due to the fortunes of war... Black Forest. I say again, Black Forest.

Capt. Shane Vansen: [Vansen interprets the code] No air support.

Commodore Glen van Ross: Red Sea. Red Sea...

Capt. Shane Vansen: [Vansen interprets again] No ground reinforcement.

Commodore Glen van Ross: You are encouraged, but not so ordered, to continue to engage the enemy. If, however, your positions become untenable, you are authorized to surrender. Semper Fidelis, and may God be with you always.

This episode defines the style of the series.
I enjoyed this episode as it was so real. This was a much more accurate representation of what war is about. It is not all action and glory. It was actually depressing which made it much more believable. The circumstances in this episode tested the limits of the characters' human spirit. Most sci-fi/war shows are action and battle. The battles fought by the '58th' were from within. It was refreshing to see a (sci-fi) series tackle the idea of fighting from this point of view. I would love to see this series come back some time. Or continued. I think the general viewer-ship pool just prefers their stories tied up at the end with a neat little bow.
