This is the only episode directed by Lee Tamahori, a native New Zealander, and it's certainly the only episode directed by someone who also happens to be half-British and half-native Maori, as is Tamahori.

The name of character Dr. Mathhew Schreck in this episode is most likely a production insider's homage to Heather K. Schreck who worked as a post-production assistant on 25 of the series' shows. (That other widely known sound-a-like, Shrek (2001), would not emerge in show business until 2001.)

This episode was directed by New Zealander Lee Tamahori. Tamahori directed the powerful 1994 film "Once Were Warriors", which dealt with a violent husband and father scenario.
