Episode 9 introduces the great character actor Harold Gould as 68-year-old Jew Barney Gerber,in the hospital due to a weak heart, whose new roommate,Jodie, gets several visitors prior to his operation, including his quarterback boyfriend Dennis, whom Barney mistakes for Joe Namath.Barney learns that Jodie and Dennis are lovers, that Eunice is dating a married congressman, that Corinne is in love with a Catholic priest, and that the only secret Benson knows is that he knows everybody else's secrets. The topper is when a nurse shows up,only to be revealed as big brother Danny in disguise, whom Barney refers to as Sonny Girl. The actual nurse is beautiful Nancy Darwin(Udana Power),who can't believe that Jodie's never made it with a girl, and figures to change his attitude in the two weeks that he's going to stay.Poor Barney remarks that in three months his roommates have included a movie producer,a longshoreman, and a hockey player, and none got to first base with her, only now, without even trying, his latest roommate has scored. At a confidential session with Dr. Medlow,Burt reveals how he met Mary and her first husband,Johnny Dallas(Eric Mason),and how he helped build them a house, falling in love at first sight with Mary.Johnny Dallas revealed himself to be a vicious member of the Mob,trying to take over Burt's construction business, and confronting him on a high girder in a final showdown that ends with Johnny falling to his death.Burt is absolved of all guilt when Dr. Medlow confirms that he acted in self defense.Joining sister Mary for a dinner engagement to discuss their respective troubles,a tearful Jessica spots Chester with his secretary Claire, and realizes that everything she's heard about her husband's philandering is true.
