- After finishing his stand up act at the Improv Station, Jerry is approached by two men from NBC who say they would like him to think about a TV show based on his stand up routine. George suggests several ideas to him and then comes up with the answer: he should do a show about nothing. NBC has a bit of trouble with the idea but George takes a liking to one of the executives, Susan. Kramer meanwhile swaps his radar detector with Newman for his helmet. He doesn't tell him it doesn't work leading Newman to get a speeding ticket. Jerry just happens to mention to Joe Davola that Kramer is having a party. He doesn't take the fact that Kramer failed to invite him very well.—garykmcd
- NBC executives Stu Shirmack (Kevin Page) & Jay Crespi (Peter Blood) meet Jerry after his nightclub act and ask him to come up with an idea for a TV series. George decides he can be a sitcom writer and comes up with the idea of it being "a show about nothing". This after many ideas such as Jerry being gymnastics coach in high school (Jerry is married and his son is not into gymnastics, while Jerry is pushing him in that direction), Jerry runs an antiques store and people come into the store and Jerry gets involved in their lives. Kramer suggests a show where Jerry is the manager of a circus. The show is not about the circus, but watching the freaks who perform at the circus. George says that the show about nothing is about friends talking about daily issues. There is no story. Like when they were waiting for a table at the Chinese restaurant. George can be a character on the show, along with Kramer and Elaine. George forces Jerry to take him to the meeting with the NBC executives.
Kramer trades Newman a radar detector for a helmet, and later Newman (Wayne Knight) receives a speeding ticket due to the detector being defective. Newman is angry with Kramer and demands that he pay for the ticket and return his helmet, both of which Kramer refuses to do.
While waiting to meet the NBC executives, George and Jerry meet "Crazy" Joe Davola (Peter Crombie), a writer and "a total nut" who goes to the same therapist Dr. Reston (Stephen McHattie) as Elaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus). Jerry, desperately searching for conversation, casually mentions he'll see him at a party Kramer will soon be having. When it becomes apparent that Joe knows nothing about it and was not invited, Jerry panics and makes a hasty and unsuccessful attempt to backtrack.
Meanwhile, George becomes more and more nervous about the impending meeting. Jerry tries to calm him down by building him up, but he overdoes it; and when they are called in to the meeting, George argues with the executives about his proposed premise ("a show about nothing"; no plot, no stories). Jerry will play himself, a comedian in New York, and will have a neighbor, a friend and an ex-girlfriend who go through daily life together. There are no stories. It does not go over well with them and when they show displeasure, George snaps, "Look, if you want to just keep on doing the same old thing, then maybe this idea is not for you. I, for one, am not going to compromise my artistic integrity. And I'll tell you something else, this is the show and we're not going to change it." Jerry suggests another potential premise.
Later, while discussing the disaster of the meeting with NBC, George focuses on starting a relationship with the one female executive, Susan Ross (Heidi Swedberg). When George later brings her to Jerry's apartment, Kramer drinks spoiled milk and vomits on her. Crazy Joe Davola, upset at not being invited to Kramer's party, attacks Kramer, kicking him in the head. However, Kramer was wearing Newman's helmet at the time, which saves him any visible injury. When Kramer tells Jerry this, he warns him that Davola says he will be looking for Jerry as well.
