    Storyline

    Edit
When Jerry runs into his old college friend Diane, she asks how George is and what he's doing now. Not knowing what else to say, Jerry says George is a marine biologist - George had been talking about a science program on TV - and she takes a definite interest. They start seeing each other, but a walk on the beach proves fateful. Kramer has gotten himself a car trunk full of golf balls and decides to go to the beach to practice his golf. He also gives Elaine a electronic organizer. Elaine is thrilled at the prospect of meeting famed Russian author Testikov, but one of Jerry's practical jokes backfires. —garykmcd

    Edit
    • Trivia
The audience response to the end of George's (Jason Alexander) story is regarded by many as one of the longest sustained laughs by the "Seinfeld" studio audience in the show's history, rivaled only by the response to Kramer's (Michael Richards) line "I'm out" from Season 4's The Contest (1992).
    • Goofs
When Jerry asks Elaine what room Testikoff is in she says 308. However, when the author opens the door it reads 507.

      [last lines]

George: The sea was angry that day, my friends - like an old man trying to send back soup in a deli. I got about fifty feet out and suddenly, the great beast appeared before me. I tell you, he was ten stories high if he was a foot. As if sensing my presence, he let out a great bellow. I said, "Easy, big fella!" And then, as I watched him struggling, I realized that something was obstructing its breathing. From where I was standing, I could see directly into the eye of the great fish.

      Jerry: Mammal.

      George: Whatever.

Kramer: Well, what did you do next?

George: Well then, from out of nowhere, a huge tidal wave lifted me, tossed me like a cork, and I found myself right on top of him - face to face with the blowhole. I could barely see from the waves crashing down upon me, but I knew something was there. So I reached my hand in, felt around, and pulled out the obstruction.

[George dramatically reveals the obstruction to be a golf ball]

Kramer: [somewhat embarrassed] ... What is that, a Titleist?

      [George nods]

Kramer: A hole in one, huh?

Jerry: Well, the crowd most have gone wild!

George: Oh, yes they did, Jerry - they were all over me. It was like Rocky 1. Diane came up to me, threw her arms around me, and kissed me. We both had tears streaming down our faces. I never saw anyone so beautiful. It was at that moment I decided to tell her I was not a marine biologist!

      Jerry: Wow! What'd she say?

George: She told me to go to hell, and I took the bus home.

A good but wildly overrated episode
It's funny how everyone remembers "The Marine Biologist", especially one particular scene. You all know what I'm talking about. And that's it. The whole George's story is magnificent and Alexander gives one of his best performances on the show. But what's really fascinating to me is that everyone regards this episodes as one of the best in the show's entire run and this story is the only one memorable. And this episode is not a single story one (like The Limo or The Dinner Party). It has three different stories and the only one people talk about is George's. Kramer's story is funny.. i guess, but it's so absurd you would expect this kind of Kramer-story in season 8 or 9. And I find Elaine's story particularly annoying (not to mention Jerry having virtually no story at all). Talking the Tolstoy bit aside, this plot is not that funny. The organizer is obnoxious and it leads nowhere. And there's that Newman cameo for no reason whatsoever. In the end you'll find yourself with a half-great episode that doesn't come close to the 5th season's greats.
