Storyline

Elaine, Jerry, George and Kramer visit friends in the Hamptons who've just had a baby. They're there for the weekend and George's new girlfriend Jane is there with him, even though they've never slept together. Jerry 's old girlfriend Rachel is there as well but trouble erupts when Rachel sees George naked and then giggles. Elaine takes an interest in the baby's pediatrician but isn't sure the compliment he paid her is necessarily a compliment. Kramer gets lobsters from a trap in the ocean not realizing that they belong to a professional fisherman. Written by garykmcd

Trivia

Seinfeld writer Peter Mehlman took credit for introducing the word "shrinkage", with apparently enthusiastic approval from Larry David (conversely, Mehlman gave David credit for "sponge-worthy", the catchword from Seinfeld: The Sponge (1995)). The word was later used in a Budweiser commercial and cited as a testament to the show's influence. See more »

Quotes

Kramer: Hey, Jerry, you ever wear silk underwear?
Jerry: No.
Kramer: Put that on the top of your list.
Jerry: No, not for me. A little too delightful.

"You have to see the baby!"

Season 5, Episode 20, "The Hamptons"

"The Hamptons" could have easily been the season 5 finale, and be utterly satisfying. Gladly, it was followed by the even better "The Opposite" which took the prize instead.

"The Hamptons" is one of the best episode of Seinfeld's glorious 5th season, and one of the best overall. All four actors deliver flawlessly, Julia more than any. Her input on the hilarious 'shrinkage' scene is some of her funniest work on the series.

It's one of the few episodes in season 5 that took the characters out of their comfort zone of Monk's Coffeeshop and Jerry's apartment, and the change in scenery does them a load of good, as it remains one of the most memorable and unique episodes of the series.
