Did You Know?

While shooting the "Swingin' with Mother Nature" sketch, Martin Short, perched on a very high tree limb, almost fell from it, which would have surely killed him. He briefly dropped character and assured the crew he was fine, saying, "It's going to take more than that to kill Jackie Rogers." The moment was left in the broadcast sketch. See more »

Fred Willard and forged checks
14 October 2018 | by Jimmy_the_Gent4See all my reviews

A funny episode about Guy forging a check to guest star Fred Willard.

The first sketch is a quick promo for the SCTV version of 12 Angry Men, which stars some flamboyant gays like Truman Capote, Charles Nelson Reilly and Rip Taylor. The main story gets started with Guy needing money and looking to forge a check to a rich celebrity. He picks Fred Willard, at that time on the NBC hit show Real People.

Willard shows ups to complain and runs into Prini and Earl. Earl arranges a secret meeting in a noisy parking garage. A funny commercial follows about Hare Krishna members singing Barry Manilow songs.

The Movie Of Week is a hilarious parody of the Jerry Lewis film The Nutty Professor, called The Nutty Lab Assistant. Martin Short debuts his Ed Grimley character, a manic, child like nerd. Andrea Martin plays his crush Miss Purdy. After drinking a potion he turns into a macho rock singer played by musical guest John Cougar. He performs his hit Jack and Diane. There is a great scene when he turns back into Ed when tries to perform another song.

Guy is in hot water with the Board Of Directors, headed by Allen Crazylegs Herschman, whose legs appear to have minds of their own. He is played by former SCTV member Harold Ramis.

Mrs Falbo tries to show the kids what to do on a rainy day but Mr Messenger is angry over marital troubles. He creates a chain reaction machine to make grilled cheese but blows up the set.

Crazylegs wants to fire Guy but the other board members out vote him, so Guy keeps his job. There is promo for a musical special for a overly theatrical Rat Pack type singer called Jackie Rogers (Short) who is attacked and killed by a cougar. His untalented son Jackie Rogers Jr (also Short) makes his debut here also.

Johnny LaRue has a new sound system that he shows to some scantily clad women he calls his Gerbils. He turns on the system and John Cougar returns for a second song Hand To Hold On To.

The last scene has Guy not learning his lesson for check forgery.
