- Tod and Buz's water skiing outing on San Diego Bay - their first day off in fourteen from their jobs working at a nearby missile plant - is cut short when they need to rescue a man from drowning in the bay, he who fell off a passing boat. He, widowed Mike McKay, fell off because he was drunk while schmoozing with who he considered potential business partners. Tod and Buz will learn that he was recently appointed guardian of his orphaned niece, nine year old Linda McKay, despite not being an obvious choice due to his irresponsible behavior, especially his excessive drinking and bad judgment concerning Linda's inheritance, as demonstrated by those so-called potential business partners who outsiders can see are taking Mike solely for a free ride, so far worth close to $10,000. Linda's banker, Frank Hammond, is most concerned, as Linda's inheritance includes the San Diego Sands Hotel, which Frank would prefer Linda sell before Mike runs the business into the ground and/or squanders away all the company and by association Linda's money. He would also prefer if Linda is awarded custody to a more responsible family. Regardless, Linda loves her uncle and would like to stay with him despite his flaws. Between the two McKays, Linda is the responsible one who looks after the irresponsible one. As such, Linda decides to hire Tod and Buz to keep Mike on the straight and narrow in preparation for another court hearing in a few days which will determine Mike and Linda's future. While Tod works to help Linda balance the hotel's books by trying to retrieve that "missing" $10,000, Buz is assigned to be Mike's shadow to ensure that he does not drink or worse leave, Mike who may feel that getting out of Linda's life is what is best for her regardless of her feelings. But a revelation as to why the presiding judge, Mary Lindstrom, awarded custody to Mike to begin with - the reason only the judge and Mike know - may change the entire complexion of Tod and Buz's work for Linda.—Huggo
