Dr. Mark Christopher is a famous scientist who believes from his Russian friend's cryptic message that the USSR will initiate a New Year's Day nuclear attack on the United States. Unable to convince his associates to act on this information, Christopher, his son, and a small band of followers, he takes shelter deep inside Carlsbad Caverns Tod and Buz assist Paula Shay, a devious newspaper reporter who wants to interview Dr. Christopher.
Tod and Buz are in White City, New Mexico during the Christmas season working at the attractions around Carlsbad Caverns National Park. On December 30, Dr. Mark Christopher, a renowned nuclear research scientist, and a large group of his friends and relatives purchase tickets to take the standard tour of the caverns. What the parks service learns before they enter based on the group's large amount of unusual supplies is that they intend to stay in the caverns at least until New Years Day, as Dr. Christopher, viewing himself as a modern day Noah, has inside information of the certainty that Armageddon will occur at 6pm that day local time in the form of a massive nuclear attack which will obliterate the entire western hemisphere. Jim Walsh, the head park ranger, has to deal with Dr. Christopher, who refuses to leave, while ensuring their safety in the caverns, ensuring that others touring the caverns are not impacted, and preventing the information from leaking out about what Dr. Christopher is doing for the possibility of inciting general panic. Tod earlier encountered Dr. Christopher as he anonymously handed Tod a legal document, deeding him his truck and trailer worth about $10,000, Dr. Christopher feeling he would have no more use for them himself. News does leak out to the media about what Dr. Christopher is doing, although not the reason, which brings a throng of reporters to the area. One of them, Paula Shay with the Boston Examiner, she who Tod befriends, will do anything to get the story - if an exclusive, the better - even manipulating the situation to her benefit.
