Tommy Gavin is a firefighter and father who's struggling to cope with the daily turmoil of his life. After his wife Janet leaves him, Tommy moves into a house across the street from her to stay close to their three children. However, the proximity of their relationship is difficult. Tommy isn't dealing very well with his estranged wife dating other men and using his kids as spies, paying them to divulge information about Janet's activities. Lifewise, the stress of his job is starting to get to him. Tommy is haunted by the memories of September 11 and even hallucinates the ghosts of the family and friends he lost. His subconscious manifests itself in the images of these former firefighters, predominately his cousin Jimmy who he often confides in. Tommy works hard to conceal his feelings from his firehouse buddies, even though many of them are still suffering as well. Written by WyattJones

Cast members Ed Sullivan, Robert John Burke and Jack McGee actually were New York City fire fighters before becoming actors. See more »

Tommy is talking to Garrity at the firehouse, with a tower truck in the background. When they all leave on the first run, truck 69 pulling out of the firehouse is a ladder, not a tower as seen earlier. See more »

Great start to a epic show that gets better but falters towards the end.

This is probably my fourth or fifth time watching this series, for me personally its up there with my other faves like The Wire, The Sopranos, and a little known Irish Crime Drama called Love/Hate. I'm saddened by the other review on this episode stating there was no comedy and that he enjoyed CSI and NCIS more. Also comparing this to Sirens is a complete joke considering rescue me aired in 2004, TEN whole years before Sirens even came to be. This reviewer is clearly very stupid, the special thing about this show is that it can have you laughing your rear off one moment and in tears the next, not many shows are able to do this anymore and IMO Rescue Me was one of the best shows to ever do this. To say there is no comedy in these episodes is laughable, it sounds like this reviewer barely paid any attention to the pilot and gave up on the show before it even started. Good Riddance.
