This episode debuted to 6.1 million viewers, making it the highest-rated premiere for a new basic cable series in 2006. It also became the most watched pilot in USA Network history.
The character of Lucinda (Anne Dudek) had a negative response from the test audience and was removed after the first episode. The character was replaced after this episode with Juliet O'Hara (Maggie Lawson) who lasted to the end of the series.
Despite being set in Santa Barbara, California, a vast majority of the show is filmed in various locations across the British Colombian Lower Mainland. The Psych office is set in White Rock, BC which bears remarkable similarity to the Santa Barbara coast. The office set can be seen when one takes a walk along the beach in White Rock. You will see the real Santa Barbara in various bird's eye shots and a few street level establishing shots.
The date given for Buzz's wedding (May 3) is Dulé Hill's birthday.
James Roday is a huge fan of Twin Peaks (as evidenced in the homage episode of Psych's Dual Spires) Many, many stars from Twin Peaks have appeared on Psych over the years, including Don S. Davis- the featured guest star of this episode - who played Major Garland Briggs in the iconic 90s series.
The MaCallum's home was filmed at the Casa Mia mansion in Vancouver. It was the same house used for Christian Grey's parents home in Fifty Shades of Grey and Fifty Shades Darker.
There are 20 actors in the pilot episode of Psych that guest starred on Supernatural (2005-2020), including Timothy Omundson, Don S. Davis, Pascale Hutton, Sage Brocklebank, and Christopher Heyerdahl. Both shows were filmed in Vancouver and there are actors who appeared in Supernatural (beyond Timothy Omundson and Sage Brocklebank, who are regulars on Psych) in almost every episode of Psych.
Approximately 3 minutes from the end of the episode, when Shawn is walking down the steps of the Police Department Headquarters, a Tupac Shakur lookalike is seen in the background.

Shawn tells Gus that he will never tell anyone that he's not psychic. Only Juliet ever finds out for certain, in Season 7, Episode 7 "Deez Nups." In the finale, on a video made for Lassiter he begins to admit it, but he stops and destroys the disc before Shawn finishes.
Despite being shown to be an unbelievable marksman with a pistol, Shawn only fires a gun two more times throughout the entire series.
The scene where Shawn picks up a pineapple and says "Should I slice this for the road" was not in the script James Roday just added it. They weren't sure wither to keep the scene or not but they decided to keep it unaware of the impact that it would have on the show so the "Pineapple" was born!
It has been Steve Franks' intent to bring back the character of Katarina McCallum so Shawn can try to restart the relationship despite him sending her father to jail.
