"Charley's Aunt" is a farce that was originally a British play back in the 1890s. It was incredibly successful and played for years there and on Broadway. It also resulted in many film versions, most notably the version from the early 1940s which starred Jack Benny. With so many good versions, I recommend you stay clear of "Where's Charley?"...an installment of the normally excellent "Playhouse 90".
Why didn't I love this version? Well, the problems are many but seeing and hearing Americans playing British college students was a significant problem...as were many of these students being close ot middle age! But the bigger problem was the laughtrack...yes, "Playhouse 90" with an inexplicable laughtrack. It just seemed invasive and inappropriate...especially for a live teleplay. To make it worse, often the laughs occurred when nothing funny had even occurred!
Overall, a poor version of the classic play that is watchable but "Charley's Aunt" should be far more than just watchable.
