- A teacher working after regular school hours finds a female student dead in the gym locker room. He is presumed to be a murderer by the irate citizenry and, worried about his life and reputation,he contacts Peter Gunn for help.
- High school teacher Paul Conlon (Christopher Dark) is working in the school after hours. He hears a scream, and goes to investigate. He finds a female student dead on the floor in the maintenance room. Mr. Simpkins (Frank Ferguson), the janitor, finds Conlon with a stick in his hand, which the janitor supposes is the murder weapon.
Conlon hires Peter Gunn (Craig Stevens) to find the real killer. Conlon claims that he did not know the deceased. She was not a student in any of the classes he taught. The teacher explains that people in town have assumed that he did the deed. They have painted "murderer" on his front door and thrown bricks through his window. Later, Lt. Jacoby (Herschel Bernardi) explains that Conlon wasn't picked up because there wasn't enough concrete evidence. Besides, Jacoby hints that he believes Conlon is innocent. Gunn sits in while Jacoby interviews Marjorie (Jimsey Somers), who was the deceased girl's best friend. She claims that her friend had a relationship with Conlon.
Public opinion overrules common sense after the story hits the paper. Gunn goes to Mother's to see Edie (Lola Albright). She complains that no one has listened to her sing that evening because they are buzzing over the student's murder. Conlon is picked up for murder and beaten up by other prisoners in jail. Jacoby asks Gunn to take Conlon and hide him until the trial. Gunn puts Conlon up at the loft of eccentric artist Vladimir (Henry Corden).
The D.A. (Herbert Rudley) promises Gunn that he's going to get to the bottom of what really happened to the deceased. Marjorie is questioned on the stand. Marjorie finally breaks down and admits that she killed the student. Marjorie was jealous of her because the student was eyeing a boy that Marjorie was interested in. Conlon is exonerated, but he tells Gunn and Jacoby that he'll continue to teach, but it's going to be a hard road to restore his trashed reputation.
