Dwight Garrett and Austin Lloyd are business partners in Aerospace Reliability Associates. Lloyd is an unethical swindler who is driving the business into the ground, making side deals and accepting bribes whenever he can. Garrett, for his part, is something of an absent-minded professor, a very knowledgeable engineer who knows little about running a business. The business is floundering as one customer accuses Lloyd of fraud and Garrett has received a job offer from another company. Garrett has asked Perry to help dissolve the partnership. Lloyd also knows that Garrett and his wife have feelings for one another and so sets them up to look as if they're going on the run to Mexico with a large amount of the company's cash, that Garrett faked a report and tried to kill Lloyd. When Lloyd turns up dead for real however, Garrett is charged with murder and Perry Mason defends him.

Come on, come on. What are you worrying about? Nobody will find out, and nobody will know. The contract's in the bag, I guarantee you. If anybody's got trouble, it's me. This partnership thing is like trying to ride a dying horse. I need that money. You, my friend, owe me Fifty-Thousand dollars. I never guaranteed who would get the contract. I only said our report would fix it so that Universal wouldn't.
