To save a life
17 January 2014 | by See all my reviews

****SPOILERS**** 39th and last of the 1/2 hour "Naked City" episodes has Det. James Halloran, James Franciscus, risk his career as well as facing jail time in him trying to get Lois Heller, Cara Williams, to tell the truth in what she knows about her boyfriend Nicky's whereabouts at the time of the murder that convicted murderer Phil Holmes is about to pay the ultimate price for. Holmes is set to be electrocuted at Sing Sing Prison is less then a half hour with only Lois being to one to save him if she's willing to. Something that the desperate Halloran is determined to have her do. It was in fact Halleron who was responsible in Holmes arrest and conviction and now if Holmes is executed he'll have to live with that fact that he sent an innocent man to the electric chair for the rest of his life.

As the minutes slowly tick by with Holmes' execution about to transpire Halloran breaks down Louis' defenses in putting her on a king size guilt trip in what she's about, or better yet not about, to do. Keep the evidence in her boyfriend's murder from the police and D.A until an innocent man Phil Holmes ends up paying for it by being zapped in Sing Sing's electric chair! It's finally when the booze that Louis has been drinking starts to ware off and she realizes the seriousness of the situation she finds herself in that she starts to come clean in what she knows. But would it be in time to save Phil Holmes life!

***SPOILERS*** A bit heavy handed but still works with James Franciscus at his best as the concerned police detective who's out to save the life of innocent man that he, by testifying against him in court, sent him on his way to be strapped into the hot seat. Cara Williams is equally as good as the confused scared and on the brink of a nervous breakdown woman who's testimony can save Holmes but can't quite bring herself to do it.Somewhat of a cop-out ending but still very effective which makes this "Naked City" episode one of the best of the entire five seasons it was on the air.
