In a laboratory, files are copies, the originals destroyed; the perpetrator is tailed- it's Nobel prize winner cancer drug researcher Dr. Max Franklin, who according to the TV news dies in a plane crash. His research colleague Liz White insists Jessica comes anyway. The firm claims he just completed work on the vaccine. Dr. Stuart Himes and Liz are ignored about safety tests. David Randall finds tests are impossible after the disappearance of crucial cultures and data and is ordered to make the tests work or get the boot. Priscilla Lake schemes about the stock's likely dive. Jessica believes to have seen Max alive in a cab, reports it to NYPD Lt. Artie Gelber, is approached by Max and tells him she saw Walter Pell, the P.I. who tails him, at the firm, he says he took the research stuff himself, someone else took his ticket and crashed, he wants to remain 'dead' for some time. As Jessica fears, there's a failed arson attempt on Max's life, which later turns out an accidentally cat-triggered bomb. Pell, an ex-cop, reports to the CEO, who orders the 'loose canon' defused. Next Jessica and Liz find Max fatally hit on the head. Gelber believes in an accidental mugger, Jessica starts sleuthing...
Jessica Fletcher is shocked to hear on television of the death of her friend, Dr. Max Franklin, in a local plane crash. Max worked for Biomec Technologies which is on the verge of making its first public stock offering. Their biggest selling point is Max's new drug, L214, a cancer treatment. Biomec CEO Frederick Grundberg announces that Max's death will have no impact on the stock issue but when they are unable to locate any of his research material, it's clear that a lot of people may lose a great deal of money. Jessica offers her condolences to Max's long-time girlfriend Liz White but imagine her shock when she late sees Max sitting in a taxi. Jessica tracks him down and he admits to have purposely missed the flight when he realized he was constantly being followed. When Max is later found dead, it's clear to Jessica that something is going on a Biomec and several people may have wanted him dead. NYPD Lt. Artie Gelber's class reunion photo gives Jessica the vital clue she needs to identify the killer.
When a brilliant scientist fakes his own death and is then actually murdered, Jessica sets the record straight when the wrong man is arrested.
