When he meets Thibaud in his hotel room, McGill is half way through a glass of cognac and a cigarette, when he pauses to brush his teeth. Admittedly, he is not subsequently seen finishing the cognac, which he has put on the bathroom shelf, (but what a waste!), but he does continue with the cigarette, which would taste almost as horrible as the cognac after the toothpaste.
