Trivia

This show was often careful to not make direct associations with foreign countries or people. However, the Balkan country here is called "Sernia," which is very close to the real Serbia, the main component of the now defunct Yugoslavia. At the beginning Sarah Taub says, "Premier Milo Jans died two weeks ago. As premier, it was his task to unite the dissident nationalities into one nation and to dispel foreign interests." That sounds a lot like Marshall Tito, the ruler of Yugoslavia, although he didn't die until 1980. One final note is that Sernia's secret police is called, "Krebb," which is very close to the name of Rosa Klebb, one of the antagonists from the Bond movie From Russia, With Love, which had come out just a few months before this. one of the best

The relationship between Vaughn and Montalban is great--tongue-in-cheek, with unexpected and clever dialogue by Robert Towne, who later wrote 'Chinatown'. The black and white photography helps create the Cold War atmosphere of Eastern European intrigue. The nice added touch of innocent June Lockhart with her troop of teenagers getting involved with the spy vs. spy scenario gives this episode some heart. I would pick this episode for any newcomers to the series, which became a phenomenon of the mid- sixties, and it started from this first season, all in black and white.
