Mama Wants to Be President!
When Thelma has to give up being President of the Church Ladies League, she decides to run again with Iola's help. In fact, Anne Haney who returns as Alberta Meechum, one of Thelma's nemesis, convinces Iola to run for President against Thelma pinning two best friends against each other. They decide to have a debate in which things get ugly between them not only costing each other an election and a friendship. Thelma and her family support her while Alberta is backing IOla for president. In the end, it turns out politics can get ugly and a friendship should be salvaged instead of permanently ruined by competition and politics. Another guest star is Doris Hess who plays Lally Purdue, one of the Church Ladies League.

Great Episode
Fantastic episode! Mama is the Church Lady president, and her term is about to come to an end. So, she decides to do anything to get her church ladies to elect her again, but soon Iola becomes a nominee, and the two start feuding, and debating.
A really fantastic episode!
Very funny, and very well written. Like most of the episodes, Vicki Lawrence, once again, steals the show with her quick wit and funny "old lady" humor. But, Beverly Archer also gets to shine more then usual, finding a harsh side to Iola. It's also very nice to see the two of them going at it over such things as "Las Vegas Night"...very funny!

Thelma vs. Iola is a classic
Writers are coming up with fantastic ideas for episodes. Pitting best friends Mama Thelma Harper (Vicki Lawrence) vs Iola Boylan (Beverly Archer) exchanging insults at a ladies church group no less was brilliant. Thelma's power hunger matched up against Iola's virtuous, hardworking persona. Priceless one-liner insults hurled like boxers exchanging punches. Their debate and rebuttals could be the series' funniest scene loaded with huge laughs. Best line was Thelma's "I've changed flat tires less flat then you are". Iola hilariously actually got into a boxing stance shadow boxing throwing weak punches. Episode is a true classic TV treasure.
