Ma The Teacher
10 February 2013 | by See all my reviews

This episode opens with Miss Beatle leaving. One of the boys finds a snake and begins scaring all the girls with it. Unfortunately, the horse spooks and throws Miss Beatle from the wagon. She sprains her leg, and Dr. Baker won't allow her to return to her job until it's completely healed. So...since the Ingalls are the star of the show, there is no other person in all of Walnut Grove who can teach school like she can! Mrs. Ingalls hesitates in taking the job until Harriet Olsen hints that Mrs. Ingalls just may show favoritism. She takes the job.

There is a young man (I'd say about 16) who has always reminded me of someone...I just never could put my finger on it. But now I know. Abel is the son of Dan Blocker, Hoss Cartwright on Bonanza. I was so excited to make this discover and can now see the resemblance. Able cannot read and is made fun of by all the kids in class. Even Laura and Mary call him "Dumb Able."

It's very amusing to see the animosity between Mrs. Ingalls and Mrs. Olsen. It's also amusing to see the animosity between the Ingalls kids and the Olsen kids. The Olsen's really bring a lot of character to this show.

In this episode, Caroline comes home after her first day and expects to have to cook supper. Charles announces that he has everything cooked. In future episodes, Charles cannot cook. This seems to be a big blunder in this episode.
