When Mrs. Oleson demands Art and French be added to the school curriculum, Laura quits, leaving Mrs. Oleson to cover the subjects herself.

The school superintendent told Mrs. Olesen that they would have to be teaching subjects like French and Art Appreciation to be in the category of earning more spending money for some much needed work on the school and new supplies. Laura doesn't know French and doesn't think that Art Appreciation would be appreciated in this area so she quits her job. Mrs. Olesen takes over.—Anonymous
