The Ten Percent Ring in Tucson has decided on Shiloh Smith to take Dan Priddy's place as their leader. Sheriff Johnny Behan has been called in to discuss revenge for the killing of Dan Priddy. Smith first suggests killing Earp but Behan says he didn't kill Priddy but that it was more likely Doc Holliday but he has too many criminal friends in Tombstone. Behan suggests instead that they let him have Earp's lead deputy Shotgun Gibbs killed which he believes will discourage Earp into leaving to which the ring agrees. Behan has them send Six-Mule Marcy to Tombstone to lure Gibbs into an ambush. Gibbs and Marcy soon become friends based on their love for their mules. Gibbs says Roscoe is under the weather so Marcy suggest racing him against two of Marcy's mules. Against the advice of Earp Gibbs goes along with the idea believing Marcy is only interested in the mules. Neither Earp or Doc feel good about the race when they hear Behan and Marcy both bet Rosoe doesn't finish the race.

After several attempts to get rid of Marshal Earp had failed, his political enemies decided to go after Shotgun Gibbs, Wyatt's close friend and right-hand man. By killing Shotgun, the Ten Percent Ring hoped to sicken Wyatt of his job and drive him out of Tombstone.
