When Denise Eldridge finds her fifteen-year-old daughter Carrie in bed with twenty-one-year-old Justin, she immediately calls police to have Justin charged with statutory rape. Benson intercedes on behalf of Carrie, calling a children's rights lawyer to assist her, but when Denise turns up dead, Carrie and Justin both end up on the suspect list. When the judge convicts Carrie of manslaughter she fails to mention which degree of the manslaughter she has been convicted of, first or second degree. In New York State second degree manslaughter can have a sentence of 3-15 years and first degree manslaughter can have a sentence of 5-25 years, so its a pretty important distinction. Considering that Carrie committed second degree murder and was pled down due to extenuating circumstances (the abuse she suffered from her mother) and her sentence of five years we can extrapolate that she would of been pled to first degree manslaughter, also known as voluntary manslaughter, but either way the judge is required by law to specify which degree of a crime a person is being convicted of.
