Second season opener
16 July 2010 | by kevin olzakSee all my reviews

Episode 16 opens the second season, as Caine becomes ill from drinking poisoned water, causing a minor fracas with Deputy Mitchell (Tim McIntire), who unsuccessfully tries to make an arrest. Gathering supplies nearby is Caleb Brown (Hal Williams) and his son Daniel (George Spell), who offers to hide the ailing Caine from the vengeful deputy. Caleb's wife Elizabeth (Mae Mercer) and daughter Juliet (Ta Ronce Allen) live on the family farm, keeping to themselves because they hide a secret from the local townspeople, a well producing fresh water to maintain the health of their livestock. A former slave, Caleb assumes that Caine was also, after spotting the markings on the priest's arms. Caine realizes that he looks to others to find his freedom, expressing the plight of being a black man in the Old West of the 1870s. Caleb does not trust Caine to maintain the secret of his hidden well, and uses his own chains to keep him a prisoner. Jim Davis stands out as Sheriff Grogan, who keeps a watchful eye on his short-tempered deputy, and hopes to find a way to help the ailing townspeople who have no good source for water. This entry was so successful that the Brown family would return the following season in one of the final episodes, "The Last Raid."
