HONG KONG – The Dragon Cup - 1960

Rod Taylor headlines this 1960-61 series as a newsman stationed in Hong Kong. Taylor is constantly in trouble with various shady types who are always involving him in their troubles. It usually takes several round of fisticuffs, a dead body or two and a gun battle before things get settled. This is the 12th episode.

Newspaper reporter Bethel Leslie hits Hong Kong looking for a story. And boy does she find one. While taking some photos of a crowds etc she is roughed up and her camera stolen. She contacts the Police and her old friend, Rod Taylor. The two had been an item some years before. Taylor takes Leslie back over the same route to see if they can find a clue why someone would assault her. They take another camera and hit the same spots. Sure enough a man tries to snatch the camera from Taylor. Taylor manages to wrestle the camera back from the thief. Back to the Police lab to have the photos developed.

They discover that one of the pictures contains an image of a missing US high court Judge. The Judge, Harold J. Stone had vanished after handing done a verdict in a big mob case some years before. Leslie and Taylor agree to split the story by line and go hunting for Judge Stone.

They finally hunt the man down and get him to talk. Stone tells the pair that he is in hiding, and if they break the story about him, he will be killed. Stone agrees to tell his tale after Taylor and Leslie promise to say nothing. Stone it seems was a Judge who had been on the payroll of, Lewis Charles, a well-known New York mob boss. Stone had grown sick of swinging decisions the mob's way. He had hit Charles up for a 100 grand bride then handed down a verdict against the mob. Stone had then left NY and has been hiding out in Hong Kong since.

Miss Leslie cannot resist breaking the story and it is soon front page news in the U.S. Of course the mob sends some nasty types to deal with Stone. Assassin Reggie Nadler makes an attempt on Stone but just misses. Taylor spots his next play and jumps Nadler before he can shoot Stone from a nearby rooftop. A quick chase over the buildings, and a well-staged round of fist a cuffs results in Nadler going for a "long fall". Stone decides to return to the U.S. and come clean about the bribe to the authorities.

Also in the cast are Philip Ahn, James Hong, Karl Swenson and Celia Lovsky. Lovsky was the ex-wife of Peter Lorre. She is well known to watchers of the original STAR TREK series. She played T' Pau in the famous, "Amok Time" episode.

Of some note here for noir fans, is the episode's writer, Jonathan Latimer. Latimer was involved in the stories or screenplays for, THE GLASS KEY, NOCTURNE, THEY WON'T BELIEVE ME, NIGHT HAS A THOUSAND EYES, PLUNDER OF THE SUN, THE UNHOLY WIFE, THE WHOLE TRUTH and ALIAS NICK BEAL.
