Trivia

The show was originally written to have Ralph and Alice move a special basement apartment for the janitor once he takes the janitor job. It would have a climax where Ralph accidentally has a load of coal dumped into their living room. It ended up being written out because of Gleason's reluctance to do much away from that apartment set. See more »

Goofs

When Ralph picks up the house phone for the second time, the off camera stagehand does not stop the buzzer noise effect in time after Ralph has taken the ear piece off the hook and the sound effect continues for a few more seconds. Jackie Gleason covers however by hitting house phone acting as if it is not working properly. See more »

Quotes

Ralph: [answering the janitor's phone yet again] Hello?
[pause]
Ralph: No, Mrs. Schwartz, this is a HOUSE phone! You can't get Jersey on it!

I is for Incompetence

The Kramden and Norton apartments are disasters. The building janitors have been quitting right and left and nothing gets done. When Ralph finds out the salary and that the apartment would be free, he decides to moonlight. Naturally, he has no knowledge of what is wrong or how to fix it, so he becomes another useless janitor. He installs a type of intercom where people can call him to repair things. It is terribly loud and abrasive, and Ralph can't go a minute without getting a call. Eventually, he has to take drastic measures. Lightweight episode for a really fat guy.
