"Hello Stranger"

The Summary line title comes from the 1962 BArbara Lewis song that is used to frame this episode.

An out-of-sequence episode, directed by Steve Buscemi(one of my favorites),is the story of a six decades plus cold case of a girl's molestation and murder that has the sadly ironic misfortune of landing in the lap of already haunted Bayliss, who will always be haunted by the Adena WAtson case. Giardello wisely passes this one on to FAlson, who in turn goes to the last detective who investigated the case, one Thomas"Tommy"Finnegan(guest star Charles Durning),a long-retired Homicide dick who possesses as many prejudices as he does intuitive qualities.

A fantastic showcase for Durning and a good chance JOn Seda(Falsone)and--to a lesser degree Kyle Secor(Bayliss)--to shine in what seemed to be an increasingly rare episode of the series that had no direct ties to the developing plot arcs of the series' run.

A portrait of Bayliss as an old man

Warning: Spoilers
First alarm bell: the episode starts with a dream sequence. Homicide has always been at its minimalist best with petty murderers whining in the Box or detectives musing about crime and death during long stakeouts. Symbolism and surreal moments are not among the show's strong points - see Pembleton's silly vision of himself in a coffin in Work Related.

Second alarm bell: the primary of the case is Falsone (Jon Seda), one the worst new entries of the last seasons, some kind of hotshot young cop with the heart of gold who sticks out in the morally complex Homicide ensemble.

Secor is always interesting, although the writing for him in the last two seasons is all over the place. Durning turns in a solid guest star appearance as a veteran detective with a personal story resembling Bayliss'.

A missed opportunity.
